JAMB announces the Direct Entry registration commencement and its new guidelines to candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced the commencement of the 2023 Direct Entry registration for interested parties in the country.

Professor Is-haq Oloyede, the JAMB registrar, announced this at a press briefing on Monday in Abuja. He also disclosed that the Board had introduced new guidelines to reduce the cases of fraudulent A-level certificates used by applicants in previous years.

He said, “You will recall that the board commenced the 2023 Direct Entry registration on Monday, 20th February 2023, but had to immediately suspend it following the discovery of the plethora of devices and machinations to circumvent and compromise the standard of A’ Level qualifications required from DE candidates.

“Recall that recent joint operations of the Federal Ministry of Education and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission on DE qualifications brought to light some of these unsavoury and nefarious activities.

“Bayero University, Kano has also consistently brought to the fore the high rate of forgery of A’ Level qualifications for DE.

The Registrar assured that the stakeholders and institutions are working assiduously to detect such, and the ones already found are being dealt with according to the provisions of the law.

JAMB’s updated guidelines for DE registrants

Professor Oloyede explained that the newly introduced guidelines are to curb the issues of fraudulent certificates submitted during applications. He also assured that the 127 candidates who had earlier registered for the 2023 DE before the exercise was suspended would be requested to return to re-register and update their applications.

He noted that the data bank put in place to address challenges associated with the A’ Level qualifications had now been renamed as ‘Nigeria Post-secondary Education Data System.

Professor Oloyede disclosed that only 13 qualifications/certificates would be accepted for the 2023 Direct Entry registration. These are;

The register disclosed that other measures would be introduced during the examination.

“The Board has instituted some measures which are to be deployed during the 2023 UTME exercise. Despite the fact that the innovations have been tested and certified, yet it is not unlikely that some hiccups might spring up when the new technology is deployed live and nationwide. We therefore solicit your support and understanding as we promptly address any unforeseen circumstances,” he said.

About JAMB and Direct Entry

The practice, which was problematic due to the expanding number of universities in Nigeria’s complex higher education system, led to the establishment of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in 1978, which was charged with managing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, a centralized admissions test.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) administers entrance exams in Nigeria for institutions of higher learning. The board administers the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination for candidates applying to undergraduate programs in Nigerian universities. Also, the board is responsible for conducting comparable tests for candidates for admission to Nigerian public and private polytechnics, mono-technics, and colleges of education.

On the other hand, direct entry refers to applications and admissions made through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), which does not involve writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Test (UTME).
