Spotify has introduced a new feature called Offline Backup, for premium users only. The new feature automatically generates an offline playlist for users based on their listening habits. It curates the tracks based on the users’ queued and recently streamed tracks, as well as any tracks their have previously downloade.
Like Spotify’s “daylist” feature, the backup playlist will be constantly updated according to what the user regularly listens to. Users can also filter the playlist by artist, mood, or genre. To do this simply, follow this prompt, Settings and Privacy> Storage > Offline listening and Settings and Privacy> Playback > Offline toggles.
“For the times that you forget to download your favourite audio, Offline Backup gives you another way to access music without using any extra data or storage”, Spotify said in an announcement today.
Recall that last year, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek announced that the company was testing a feature called “Offline Mix” feature. This is similar to YouTube Music’s “Offline mixtape” feature. It allows users to auto-download up to 500 songs in different playlists if users turn on the “Smart download” functionality.
However, the CEO did not indicate if the company will roll out that feature to all users. The announcement today clearly indicates that the new feature will only be available to Premium users globally.
Spotify also said that the Offline Backup playlist will automatically appear on the home screen when you are not connected to the internet. Alternatively, users can also add the list to their library for easier access.
Offline Backup will begin rolling out on Android and iOS this week, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It will appear automatically in the Home feed anytime you are offline.
If you can’t find the Offline Backup on your, just make sure that your Spotify app is updated to the latest version and that you have listened to at least five songs recently. Then, enable offline listening for yourself. You can find this in Settings > “Data Saving and offline” > “Offline access”.
