Good morning!

Reports, although apocryphal, are making rounds that OneCoin crypto scam founder, Ruja Ignatova was killed on a yacht in Greece five years ago. The Bureau for Investigative Reporting and Data reportedly saw documents that contain an agent report that Ignatova was killed. It even goes so far as to say that she was dismembered, with her body tossed into the sea.

However, the reports seem speculative, with no conclusive evidence offered. Also, it looks unlikely that the FBI would put dead individuals on the most wanted list.

Recall that Ruja Ignatova was the founder and leader of OneCoin, which is regarded as the biggest crypto scam in history. She made it to the list of ten most wanted criminals of the FBI last year.

Here is our weekly newsletter roundup. Now get a bucket of popcorn and follow through. First, a summary….

Ethereum Shanghai update set for February

Ethereum Triple Halving explained: All you need to know
After the Zhejiang testnet went live in early February, the Shanghai upgrade of the Ethereum network on the Sepolia testnet has been officially scheduled for the end of February.

The Shanghai/Capella upgrade, also called ‘Shapella,’ is set for deployment on the Ethereum testnet Sepolia network at epoch 56832, which is scheduled for 4:04:48 AM UTC on February 28, the core blockchain development team said in a blog post on Tuesday. According to the team:

This upgrade follows The Merge and enables validators to withdraw their stake from the Beacon Chain back to the execution layer. It also introduces new functionality to both the execution and consensus layer.”

Note that this will be the second public testnet launch before the Shanghai hard fork goes live on the mainnet.

England CBDC will respect privacy

The Bank of England has published a technology working paper where it lays out its ideas on a future digital pound and user privacy is being considered.

The paper which was published this week appears to allay some of the fears that CBDCs could be used to control spending habits and also switch off anyone who might be considered by the government as being in contravention of rules or politics. In contrast, it says the bank will not program the CBDC to “restrict its use”, but will only do so in order to “give users greater functionality”.

Another element of the proposed CBDC is that of privacy. It explains that it will enable users to hide their personal data, not just from any one they transact with, but even from the bank itself. It looks extremely promising so far if the bank does implement these structures into its CBDC.

Crypto queen is reportedly dead

All you need to know about Onecoin, the biggest crypto scam in history
According to recently uncovered documents, the missing crypto queen, Ruja Ignatova, who has been on the FBI’s top ten most wanted fugitives list, could have been dead the whole time.

New information has come to light after law enforcement launched investigations into the murder of Lyubomir Ivanov, the General Directorate of the National Police in Bulgaria. The taped records found at his home, where he was shot, revealed that one of Bulgaria’s biggest drug lords, Hristoforos Amanatidis, also known as Taki killed Crypto Queen to cover up his involvement in the OneCoin project.

Two investigative journalists from Bulgaria, Dimitar Stoyanov and Atanas Tchobanov, found transcripts of these taped conversations, which they published online. According to them, Ignatova was murdered on a yacht in Greece in November 2018. Her body was then dismembered and dumped into the bottom of the Ionic Sea.

The Bulgarian-bord German citizen shot into the limelight with her crypto project, OneCoin, back in 2014. This so-called “crypto project” was a glorious pyramid scheme where buyers were incentivized with a commission if they managed to sell the currency to more people.

NFT marketplace shuts down

NFTs, Blockchain and Web3: The next kinds of nerds are being raised
On Thursday, crypto exchange WazirX announced that it was shutting down its NFT marketplace due to low activity and challenging business environments caused by high taxation, regulatory trouble, and overall market instability, which had invariably rocked the digital assets sector.

According to the the announcement:

We regret to announce that the WazirX NFT Marketplace has been sunsetted. We are proud to have launched India's first NFT Marketplace in June 2021, which showcased the work of many creators. Unfortunately, it did not gain much traction.”

The platform, which was launched in 2021, featured non-fungible tokens like digital art pieces, audio files, videos, programs, tweets, and all kinds of digital goods and services. With the marketplace now shutting down, users will still be able to hold their pre-existing NFTs in their own wallets. However, if they want to sell them or trade NFTs in any way, they will have to turn to other marketplaces, like OpenSea.
