Weekly Roundup: Nigeria, China Finally Sign $328m Agreement to Boost ICT Sector


There were quite a lot of interesting happenings during the week. However, I am going to share just a few outstanding ones with you. They include President Buhari’s visit to China and the signing of a $328m agreement to boost the ICT sector; the launch of the new Nipost AVS which will create a lot of employment for the youth, and other interesting stories.

Nigeria, China Conclude Agreement to Boost ICT Sector

Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, visited his  Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, to witness the signing of the $328m agreement on the National Information and Communication Technology Infrastructure Backbone Phase 11 (NICTIB 11) project during the week.

This agreement is one of the promises President Buhari made during his six-day official stay in China for the 7th Summit on China-Africa Cooperation holding between September 3 and 4.

The project which is aimed at developing information and communications technology in Nigeria would be executed by Galaxy Backbone Limited of Nigeria and Huawei Technologies Limited (HUAWEI) of China at the cost of the $328m facility that would be provided by the Chinese EXIM Bank.

Recall the 5 girls from Regina Pacis school in Anambra state who won the Technovation Challenge for developing the “FD-Detector” mobile application that helps fight fake drugs by scanning the barcode on drugs? Well, the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo, received them at the Statehouse, Abuja.

The Vice President also added that “We have already drawn up an indicative curriculum and of course, the focus is technology because technology is the leveler and it will bridge not a few divides, not just the gender gap, but practically everything, including the knowledge gap between developing countries and developed countries.”

AMVCA 2018 Award: BBnaija Bambam’s Outfit Goes Viral

The 6th annual Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards, which held during the week at the Eko Hotels And Suites, Victoria Island Lagos. The event started with the usual red carpet but Bambam of BBnaija’s outfit stood out and took over social media.

Some of her ‘fans’ took to social media platforms to express how disappointed they were of her outfit.

However, she was sweetly defended by Teddy A. After all, who says his mother’s soup is salty.

Nigerian Youths can Cashout Big Time by Becoming NIPOST’s AVS Field Agents

During the week, we talked about the newly-launched tools by NIPOST. These tools include the NIPOST Digital Addressing System, Address Verification System, and an E-Commerce API.
