WEEKLY ROUNDUP: Ooni Weds Prophetess, Senate Suspends Illicit Bank Charges, OAU, UniLag Clash on Twitter and Many More

Ooni and prophetess

Another beautiful week has ended and we hope it was exciting for you. As you relax after the week’s hustle, we bring you a quick summary of the events that happened during the week. Ranging from the Nigerian Senate putting an end to excessive bank charges, to OAU vs Unilag clash on twitter, the trending news about the Ooni Of Ife and his prophetess wife and lots more.

Nigerians React as Senate Suspends Illicit Bank Charges and Increases ATM Withdrawal Limit to N40,000.

One of the many prayers of Nigerians was answered during the week as the senate unanimously passed a resolution against illicit deductions by banks.

After the reading of a motion sponsored by Senator Gbenga Ashafa, members of the upper chamber passed the resolution to stop banks from making excessive deductions from customers accounts.

Nigerians couldn’t keep their cool on social media. Their reactions are pretty much everything you could expect with some even asking for more inquisition into other sectors.

Nigerians hope this would bring the culture of excess and arbitrary bank charges to a screeching halt especially if it becomes permanent after the investigations.

OAU and Unilag students win BlueChip Inter-Campus Machine Learning competition

After an intensive 5-day learning bootcamp, Olajide Abdulrazzaq Folarin (Obafemi Awolowo University), Sadiq Aderinto and Stanley Obumneme Dukor (both of the University of Lagos) jointly won the first Inter-Campus Machine Learning competition.

Despite the fact that students of both schools jointly won the first position, twitter was turned upside down trying to compare between both schools which is better. The product of this were a series of hilarious tweets hashtagged #OAUvsUNILAG

Someone even pointed out that the argument had spiralled from one about technology and innovation into one about obscenities.

It was really an absolutely crazy time on twitter

Nigeria is fourth fastest growing country-community on GitHub.

According to data released by GitHub at State of the Universe event, Nigeria is now one countries where the highest number of new GitHub members come from

This is actually very impressive because GitHub is not a traditional software neither is it a social media platform. It is a serious environment where users are willing, not only to read other users’ codes, but also to contribute their own.

It’s a welcome development because the rising number of Nigerian users could influence GitHub to develop more tooling and support programs for the Nigerian community.

Congratulations to Nigerian at number 4, gradually we will make it to number 1.

Flutterwave CEO, Iyin Aboyeji Resigns  as Startup Gets New $10m Funding From Mastercard

During the course of the week, Co-founder of Flutterwave, Iyin Aboyeji, announced his resignation as CEO of the company. Aboyeji who has been the CEO of the financial services provider since he created it in 2016 said he is stepping down to “pursue family goals.”

Following this development, Co-Founder, Olugbenga Agboola, will replace Iyin Aboyeji as CEO of the company. We wish Iyin all the best.

Amidst his resignation Flutterwave concluded a new ‘Series A’ extension round of funding with MasterCard, Fintech and several other financial giants taking part in it.

This speaks to the fact that Flutterwave is not just a one-man organisation and the company is indeed “bigger than anybody right now.”

Social Media Reacts as Ooni weds Prophetess

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi revealed that he now has a new queen after his relationship with his previous queen hit the rocks. This announcement brought down the whole social media, not just because he married a new wife, but the fact the that lady is a prophetess.

The information was made public on the monarch’s Instagram account. The statement reads:

“I waited patiently upon the Almighty the King of kings, he eventually did it in the midst of many trials.
Shilekunola, Moronke, Naomi; the greatest Arsenal you can apply on this highly revered throne with many rules and regulations in the midst of undiluted tradition, heritage and culture is the “Fear Of God In You”, which is the beginning of your wisdom on this throne of Oduduwa.
You are welcome home my beautiful and adorable queen.”

This brought a lot of reactions on social media .

Nigerians wondered why Ooni decided to marry a born again prophetess and hoped that she would be able to practice the tradition of Ife as well as work of evangelism.

Despite all grumblings on social media, the marriage right has already been performed

Happy married life to the couple.
