5th Batch of CodeLagos Out-of-School Programme Begins Next Week

Following the successful completion of the previous batches of the CodeLagos out-of-school initiative, the Lagos State government is set to commence its 5th batch on Monday, 12th November 2018.

An initiative of the Lagos State Government to teach the state’s residents how to code, CodeLagos was launched back in 2016. Its aim is to teach one million Lagosians how to code before 2020 and position Lagos as the technology frontier for Africa.

Living up to this target, the initiative has held three batches of training this year alone. It also successfully trained over 60,000 residents through its In-school (for secondary school students) and CodeLagos Out-of School programmes.

Participants in CodeLagos out-of-School classes are equipped with essential coding skills including Java and Python programming, Oracle’s Alice and Greenfoot, as well as Blockchain Technology. The classes are held in over 50 Out-of-School centres in 24 locations across the state. These includes – Agege, Epe, Igando, Lagos-Island, Yaba, Surulere, Isolo, Ipaja, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Ilupeju, Meiran, Fadeyi, Onikan.

The initiative also has quite a lot of transnational companies that provide funding and technical expertise. These include PricewaterhouseCoopers, SystemSpecs, ARM, 9Mobile, Oracle, and Siemens.

Training one million people seems like an ambitious goal but at this rate, the state may be on the way to grooming founders of future technology giant companies. Although registration for the 5th Batch is closed, training begins on Monday.
