Microsoft has unveiled an artificial intelligence powered live captioning and subtitling for PowerPoint presentations. With the world being global and people speaking different languages, the new AI tool makes it easy for presentations to be better understood by a wider audience. Thus, live captioning and subtitling brings the power of AI to presenters. And with it, “they can convey simple and complex information across subjects and topics,” says Microsoft.

The tool provides captioning and subtitling in real time and can also be configured to display either a native language or a completely different language. The system uses speech recognition that automatically adapts based on the presented content for more accurate recognition of names and specialized terminology.

But that’s not the only thing the feature does.

Microsoft, one of the leading companies developing AI technology, announced that the new feature is largely targeted at the deaf and people with hearing disabilities.

Similarly, the new AI feature aims to make it easy for this group of people to better understand live presentations. This helps to make PowerPoint presentations more unique and impactful.

Microsoft also flagged off the new feature as part of the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

“Leaving behind a billion people is contrary to our mission of empowering every person on the planet to achieve more,” says Microsoft India President Anant Maheshwari. “Inclusion is at the heart of everything we create at Microsoft.”

When launched, live captioning and subtitling for PowerPoint will support more than 10 spoken languages and captioning for over 60 languages.

According to Microsoft, live captioning and subtitling for PowerPoint will be widely available by late January 2019. The feature will be available for Office 365 subscribers across Windows, Mac or PowerPoint Online.
