CPN Calls for more Professionalism in Nigeria’s Information Technology Sector


The Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) has reiterated that in this digital age, Nigeria’s information technology sector is very crucial to the Nigerian economy and it plans to focus on it. This it made known today, during the second edition of its CPN Media Executive forum in Lagos.

Speaking at the event, the council’s Registrar/Secretary, Mr Alwell Achumba, noted that to ensure that Nigeria’s Information Technology sector is prepared for global competitiveness, the council must ensure professionalism in the sector.

He also added that to ensure and regulate much needed professionalism in the sector, it is mandatory for persons engaged or seeking seeking to engage in IT training/Education, sale and/or use of computing facilities and the provision of services to be registered and licensed by the council.

Hence the need for a mutual relationship between the council and media, a major player/influencer in the IT ecosystem, to help highlight the importance of this.

On its own part, the council will be be holding its annual awareness-generating program, the IT Professionals’ Assembly. Themed “Digital Infrastructure: Defining the Next Step“, the assembly will hold between 26-27 June, 2019 at NICON Luxury Hotel in Abuja.

It will bring together stakeholders and industry players to make decisions that will positively impart the IT sector and the country as a whole.

Also, on the part of human capital development which is at the core of its activities, the council runs trainings for members, conducts professional exams and inducts young computer graduates from polytechnics and universities to become professionals.

Also speaking at the event, CPN’s President/Chairman-in-Council, Prof. Charles Uwadia, said CPN’s interest is to have many members who practice to be a part of the council. Already the council has 5000 registered members and is looking to have over 20000 members.

He also added that aside maintaining professionalism, the CPN improves interaction with sister agencies such as National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) as well as agencies in the education sector such as Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

On the part of the media, the Chairman Nigeria Information Technology Reporters Association (NITRA), gave a resounding assurance that the media remains a dependable ally in achieving the council’s mandate of effective regulation of Nigeria’s Information Technology sector.

The Computers Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) was established through Act No 49 of 1993. The Act was passed into law on 10th June and gazetted on August 9 1993.

The CPN IS therefore a corporate entity that is charged with the regulation, control and supervision of the computing profession and practice in Nigeria in line with Section 1 (2) of the Act. It also creates local and international contracts for its members as well as sanctioning for those that err.

The council is under supervision of the Federal Ministry of Education, with the National Assembly having/performing oversight functions over it.
