MTN Gained 2m New Internet Subscribers in Just 3 Months

Internet penetration in Nigeria is growing at quite an impressive rate. NCC Industry statistics for July 2019, shows that 773,449 new subscribers were added to the broadband. This brings the total number of subscriptions to 64,366,778 at a broadband penetration rate of 33.72%.

According to reports, this is expected to rise to 55% by 2025, with 70% having 3G connectivity and 17% having access to 4G networks. This explains the reason behind the country’s regulator push for the trial of 5G services in the country, despite concerns of the country’s readiness for the next generation of mobile internet connectivity.

Also according to the NCC stats for July, it is revealed that Nigeria has 174,950,011 telephone subscribers which is equivalent to a 92% teledensity.

Market leader, MTN, continued its dominance with 37.43% of the subscriber share, translating to 65,379,196 users. Meanwhile, Glo lost its second place position to Airtel according to the data. Airtel displaced Globacom to takeover its position as the second placed telco in Nigeria with 46,836,395 subscribers (26.80%).

However, Globacom follows closely with 46,713,068 subscribers (26.70%). Troubled telco, 9mobile, continues to trail the group with 15,739,967 subscribers translating to 9% of the total value.

Available statistics show that current internet subscribers stand at 122,681,418, indicating an increase of 389, 339 from the 122,292,079 recorded for June.

Of this value, market leader MTN takes the lion’s share of 52,269,270 showing a meagre increase of 14,353 from the 52,254,917 subscribers for June.

Airtel also claims second spot here, with the biggest increase of the pack – 428,012 – to stand at 32,403,272 subscribers from the 31,975,260 recorded in June.

Globacom comes next, gaining 102,017 users to stand at 29,124,366 subscribers in July followed by 9mobile who continued its downward trend loosing 237,973 subscribers to stand at 8,801,580.

Interestingly, Visafone had its 82,930 subscribers value reflecting for the month July on the GSM band.

These figures see the GSM providers keep their place as leaders with 99.70%, while the CDMA, Fixed Wireless/wired and VoIP all have 0.10% market share respectively (CDMA – 0, Fixed Wireless/wired – 10,144 and VoIP – 377,522 ).

However, despite its trend of losing thousands of customers, 9mobile still remains the choice telco for porting subscribers as it recorded the highest number of porting customers. About 7,000 users ported to the telco in July. That’s way higher than the network with second highest porting activity, MTN which recorded only 2,150 incoming users.

Other telcos like Airtel and Globacom recorded the least with 589 and 750 incoming porters respectively.
