Following an announcement made in July last year, MTN Nigeria has kicked off its plans to launch 5G internet connectivity in Nigeria with a live demo that took place today in Abuja.
This comes after a similar demo by the telco was done in South Africa where the company was able to attain a speed of 20 Gigabytes per second with less than 5 minutes latency.
Recently, we announced that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) was making plans to deploy 5G Network in the country, with MTN’s live demonstration in Abuja, the telco company has put itself one step ahead of the NCC.
Benefits and Effects of 5G Network
With the launch of 5G comes faster internet connectivity. The 5G Network has 1000 times the capacity of 4G. With 5G, the number of devices that can be connected is 100 times that of a 4G Network.
In addition, the latency experienced on a 5G Network is found to be 10 times lower than that on 4G. These benefits cumulatively make 5G Network 10 times more reliable than its 4G counterpart.
Reviews from users on MTN’s 4G Network also showed that data got exhausted speedily.
That said, concerns have arisen over the prospective 5G Network about the effect it will have on data consumption.
As part of its efforts to alleviate the concerns, the telco company has repeatedly said that it is committed to providing quality data at affordable prices to Nigerians.
Speaking on the benefits of 5G Network to subscribers, MTN said:
“5G will make our life better, drive incremental capacity and open up new businesses. MTN as a company is constantly making efforts to break barriers by democratising voice and data connectivity in order to improve subscriber experience, and has invested over N800 billion in infrastructure in Nigeria.”

Following this demo, the telco company will continue with its plans to make 5G Network available in Nigerian cities.
