Coronavirus recoveries in Nigeria surpass the 1,000 mark for the first time as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reports 184 new Covid-19 cases for May 13, 2020. This brings the total number of cases in the country to 4,971.
As usual, Lagos maintained its top spot on the daily log with 51 new cases, slight reduction from 57 recorded the day before. This brings the total number of cases in the state to 2,041 representing 41% of total cases in the country.
Neither Kano nor Abuja made the second spot on today’s update as Jigawa, Bauchi and Katsina toppled them with 23, 16 and 16 new cases each. Kano recorded 14 new cases to finish the day with 707 total cases. Abuja got 10 new cases to finish with a total of 370 cases.
For regional representation, of the 22 states recorded in the daily update, the Northwest has the highest representation with 6 states coming from that region (Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto and Kebbi). The Northcentral has the second most representation with 5 states (FCT, Kwara, Nasarawa, Plateau and Niger).
The Southwest has 4 states (Lagos, Oyo, Osun, and Ondo), the Southeast (Ebonyi, Enugu and Anambra) and Southsouth (Delta, Rivers and Edo) have 3 appease while the Northeast was represented by only 1 state (Bauchi) for the first time in a really long time.
Cross River and Kogi are the only two states yet to record a single Covid-19 case.
Tests, recoveries, deaths and active cases
Nigeria records less than 1,000 tests for the first time since May 6 as NCDC reports 990 new tests in the last 24 hours. This brings total tests carried out in the country so far to 29,408.
The falling number of tests appears to have been gradual and maybe systematic. It will be interesting to see how many new cases will be recorded if the NCDC hits its highest daily testing capacity of 1,696 recorded on May 6, which incidentally was the first time it crossed the 1,000 tests mark.
The total number of recoveries crossed 1,000 for the first time as 111 new recoveries recorded gave the nation a total of 1,070 recoveries. 111 is impressive although it still falls short of the highest daily tally for recoveries (124 ) recorded on May 11.
Recovery rate in the country enjoyed a massive improvement, from 20% recorded the day before to 21.5%
Six new deaths were recorded in the day in review to bring total deaths to 164. This gives the country a mortality rate of 3.2%, a slight improvement from 3.3% recorded the day before.
Total number of active cases in the country currently stands at 3,737. This means 75.1% of cases in the country are still active.
The Lagos situation
Following a poll organised by the Lagos state government on whether to embark on another state-wide lockdown to check the spread of coronavirus, residents have taken to Twitter to trend the hashtag, #NoLagosLockdown.
However, while many Lagosians took advantage of the hashtag to voice their trepidations concerning another lockdown, in the poll itself those in support of the lockdown appear to be winning. And by a wide margin too.
As of the time of compiling this report, those in favour of the lockdown were 50% while those not in favour were just 39%. It will be interesting to note however, that Twitter is a global platform and as such, the vote can’t truly be said to be restricted to only Lagosians.
Thus, it is very possible, and likely, that many Nigerians outside of Lagos, especially those in the diaspora have taken part in the poll and out of goodwill have voted for Lagosians to embark on another lockdown. In essence, that poll may not be a true reflection of how Lagosians feel.
Africa and the World
South Africa continues to lead the continent with a total of 12,074 cases after recording 724 new cases. Egypt is still second after getting 338 new cases to finish the day with 10,431 total cases. Morocco is still third with 94 new cases, bringing total number of cases to 6,512.
Egypt has the highest number of deaths in Africa with 556. Algeria has the second highest with 522 deaths while South Africa is third with 219 deaths.
Around the world, there are 4,422,593 Covid-19 cases. 1,654,876 have recovered while 297,558 have died. Global recovery rate is currently 37.4% while death rate stands at 6.7%
