The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported 284 new cases of Covid-19 in the country to bring the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria to 6,677.
Lagos got its highest ever daily tally with an outstanding 199 new cases. This is also the highest daily figure for a state, smashing the previous highest of 183 it set on May 7. This brings the total amount of confirmed cases in Lagos to 2954, representing 42.7% of total cases in the country.
Rivers continues to record more and more cases despite the strict lockdown as the state received its highest daily tally till date, 26 new cases to put it second on the daily log. This brings the total number of cases in that state to 79.
Kano returned to the daily log after a day’s absence with only 5 new cases which brings its total number of confirmed cases to 847. Katsina is yet to return to the update after its second day away from it. It however still maintains its 4th spot on the log.
By zonal representation, of the 12 states and the FCT documented on the day in question, the Southwest has the highest regional representation with 3 states (Lagos, Oyo and Ekiti).
The Southsouth was represented by states (Rivers and Delta) as was the Northeast (Borno and Taraba), the Northcentral (Plateau and Kwara), and the Northwest (Jigawa and Kano). The Southeast was represented by only one state (Abia).
Testing, recoveries, deaths and active cases
A total of 1,332 new tests were carried out on the day under review. This is sort of around our average testing capacity at the moment and it brings the total number of tests conducted in the country to 38,231.
Nigeria recorded more than 100 new recoveries for the first time in 3 days as NCDC reports 106 new recoveries on the day under review. This puts the total number of discharged cases at 1,840, giving the nation an improved recovery rate of 27.5%, up from 27%, representing a rise for the second consecutive day.
The NCDC reported 8 new Covid-19 deaths within the last 24 hours to bring the total number of deaths to exactly 200. This mean mortality rate remains stagnant at 2.9% for the second consecutive day.
The total number of active cases in the country is currently 4,637 up from 4,475 recorded the day before. This means 69.4% of total cases in the country are still active, a reduction from 69.9% recorded the previous day.
Africa and the world
South Africa continues to be relentless on the continental scene as the country crosses 18,000 cases to finish the day with 18,003 after recording 803 new cases. Egypt comes a distant second with 745 new cases to bring its total to 14,229.
Algeria hasn’t looked back since overtaking Morocco in third place as the north African country recorded 165 new cases to finish the day with a total of 7,542. Morocco is 4th with 7,133 total cases while Nigeria comes 5th on the continental log.
For deaths on the continent, however, Egypt tops the list with 680 Covid-19 deaths. Algeria is next with 568 deaths while South Africa with 339 deaths comes third.
The USA continues to dominate the world scene after getting 21,408 new cases to finish with a total of 1,591,991 confirmed cases, representing 31.3% of global cases. There are 370,076 recoveries and 94,994 Covid-19 deaths.
Globally, there are more than 5 million total cases of coronavirus. More than 2 million people have recovered while more than 330,000 people have died.
