How Nigerians Celebrated Fathers Day on Social Media- the Good, the Bad and the Absolutely Hilarious

Is it too late for us to wish fathers a happy Fathers Day? I hope not. The celebration on Sunday was both inspiring and interesting, especially the touches of innovation and thoughtfulness that mothers, wives and children put into celebrating the father figures in their lives.

It was not all a rosy celebration, however, as there were still squabbles of who truly is the father between absentee fathers and single mothers.

How Nigerians Celebrated Fathers Day on Social Media- the Good, the Bad and the Absolutely Hilarious

Here are some of the highlights of the day.

The good

After the recent bad publicity that men have received as regards forcing themselves on females, the father’s day celebration shone the light on another crux of men who are supporters. These are well-meaning men who put the work in to show their kids and families that they love and support them.

Non-biological fathers were also celebrated on the day. Sometimes, Twitter influencers are usually the go-to people for Nigerians when cases like sexual assault, SARS/police harassment occur. And some of those influencers who have stood as father figures weren’t left out.

The bad and the hilarious

If you think though that only men get to be fathers then you are terribly wrong as some women also decided to celebrate themselves on fathers day. According to them, if they play the roles of both father and mother to their children then they might as well receive the glory. They include Nollywood celebrities, Mercy Aigbe; and Tonto Dikeh, and Ghana’s Yvonne Nelson.

Things got a little ugly however when Mercy Aigbe’s shoutout to herself got a response from her ex-husband insinuating that if she wants to be their children’s father as well, then she has to take up the expenses, like school fees which he has borne up until that point.

In all…

Fathers Day celebration is a welcome reminder of the good men that are still very much present in this age. It is also a reminder to the younger generation of men how much positive impact they can make in their families, businesses, and society at large.

Because it is never too late, Happy Fathers Day!
