Avengers Assemble! We all know and love the Hulk. With his signature
“Hulk Smash! grunts’, the unimaginable destruction Bruce recks on villains is just exhilarating and heart jarring. However, while everyone knows the Hulk, many do not know that there is a She-Hulk. Yes, there is a female hulk that is not just all muscles like Bruce, she also got brains and is very sexy.

In an upcoming Disney+ series, Tatiana Maslany will be playing the role of Jennifer Walters, the super-powered attorney also known as She-Hulk. Tatiana is popularly known for her multi-part role in Orphan Black.

She-Hulk (Jennifer Walters) is the super-powered attorney cousin of the Hulk.

Before the series is premiered, I wanted to bring you up to speed on the origins of the female Hulk and how she fits into the whole Avengers universe.

Going Green – the Origin

Although it might surprise you, She-Hulk was created as far back as the 1980s with the comic book ‘SAVAGE SHE-HULK #1″. The origin tells the story of Jennifer Walters, a smart attorney daughter of Sherriff Morris Walters and Eliane Banner-Walter as she becomes a superhero.

Jennifer attended not one but two ivy league colleges to fight criminals like her dad. She became a super lawyer who fought for the innoocent.

Like many super-heroes, Jennifer didn’t plan to become the female Hulk. The simple defining moment occurred after she was shot while going after crime boss Nicholas Trask for framing one of her clients. After she was shot by Trask’s operatives, she needed a blood transfusion. But with no one else around to donate, her cousin, Bruce Banner gave her his hulk blood to save her life.

As you must have guessed by now, taking in Hulk’s gamma radiated blood worked all too well. She survived and a side effect of the blood made her something more; a giant green rage monster called – the She-Hulk.

The Story

Initially, Jennifer couldn’t control the power of the Hulk and literally transformed anytime she got pissed or irritated. However, she was able to gain control and keep herself calm and smart in Hulk form, something Bruce really had a problem with. She was also kind of attractive despite the muscles.

The character was created by Stan Lee who wrote only the first issue. Most of the other issues including The Savage She-Hulk were written by David Anthony Kraft and pencilled by Mike Vosburg, and most issues were inked by Frank Springer.

Over time, Jennifer became an awesome Super Hero and moved to New York (home of the Avengers). Soon after her arrival, she was recruited as the new muscles for the Avengers.

She also had a stint as a member of the Fantastic 4. Despite being a super hero, Jennifer didn’t quit being an attorney. She advocated for super heroes and other people in court.

In 2006, CIVIL WAR: FRONT LINE, Jennifer showed her power as an attorney when she defended Speedball after the disaster of the Civil War. The events of CIVIL WAR were set off by Speedball and the New Warriors, who tried to take down a group of Super-Villains they weren’t prepared to face. All the team members except for Speedball were killed, along with 612 civilians, including 60 children.

She-Hulk dated Thor

In her love life, She-Hulk had flings with many superheroes but the most significant is her longtime lover, John Jameson. She also had a thing with the god of thunder Thor.

She has gone up against some pretty terrifying villains over the years. She also has super hero friends like the green guardian (Gomora) and the wasp who assisted when the battles were tough.

18th greatest Marvel Character

Due to the many roles the female Hulk has played over the years both her personality and costume has gone through various changes. Unlike Superman who is known for his blue and red tights, she has no outstanding costume. So, it will be interesting to see what Marvel comes up with for the upcoming series.

Some of the roles of She-Hulk include Sensational She-Hulk, JLA/Avengers, Single Green Female, Civil War, World War Hulk, Post-World War Hulk, Secret Invasion, Lady Liberators

Everything You Need to know about Disney's Upcoming She-Hulk Series

According to Comic Book Resources, She-Hulk was ranked as the 18th greatest Marvel Comics character. Globally, Wizard Magazine ranks it as the 104th greatest comic book character of all time. IGN, however, ranked her as the 88th greatest comic book hero of all time.

She-Hulk also ranked 11th in Comics Buyer’s Guide’s and among the 100 Sexiest Women in Comics list. After Super-girl, she is the next Marvel female character to earn her own series.

In the comic book world, her next adventure will be as an immortal in IMMORTAL SHE-HULK #1 by Al Ewing and Jon Davis-Hunt,

Summary

With a great cast and multiple comic book storylines to follow, the upcoming She-Hulk series will be something to watch out for. While I believe the origin of her powers in the series will be close to that of the comics, other aspects are pretty uncertain.

Whichever way it is narrated, a whole new Hulk is something many will love to see. There’s no release date yet for the series on Disney Plus.
