Google Unveils $25 million Global Impact Challenge for Women-Focused Organisations, Here's how to Apply

Big tech giant, Google has launched its Global Impact Challenge to empower women and girls worldwide.

The Google initiative has been announced on this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) themed #ChooseToChallenge. Google.org is committing $25 million to the challenge and will also support 1 million women entrepreneurs in rural India.

Google.org President, Jacquelline Fuller stated that the challenge is aimed at advocating for gender equality and supporting innovative nonprofit organisations creating opportunities for women and girls to learn, succeed and reach their full potential.

We’re calling on ideas from nonprofits and social organizations around the world that are working to advance the economic empowerment of women and girls and create pathways to prosperity.

“Google.org will provide $25 million in overall funding and Impact Challenge grantees will receive mentoring from Googlers, Ad Grants and additional support to bring their ideas to life,” she added.

Jacquelline Fuller leads Google.org, the philanthropy arm of Google which invests more than $200 million yearly to advance nonprofits leveraging technology to build human capacity across various countries, especially those in unserved and underserved communities.

Google.org is partnering with Vital Voices, Project Everyone and a panel of experts composed of women leaders from over 15 countries with deep expertise in global public policy, advocacy, research, business, technology and more to select the ideas with the greatest potential for impact.

Application Criteria

Organisations applying to the Google.org Impact Challenge should prepare a project proposal on women-focused projects backed by research and data, and creating economic opportunities for women and girls.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate the full scope of their project and what makes it unique in philosophy or execution. Also, candidates are required to put together a team including women in leadership positions and expert partners capable of implementing a feasible, well-developed plan.

Other criteria include detailing how the project can scale beyond the initial proposal, either directly, as a model for other efforts, or an advancement in the field.

All applications must be submitted in English.

How to Apply

To apply for the $25 million Google.org Impact Challenge, access the application form here. The application is in two (2) stages, but the Stage 1 is open for entries through the form while high-potential organizations will be passed on to Stage 2.

First, read through the introduction and instruction pages. Then go on to enter the basic information for your organisation including full registered name, website url, social media handles, address and country.

Fill in the founding date, number of employees, annual budget as well as your full name, job title and email address (if you’re the one completing the application).

After this, proceed to provide required information on your project and select the funding range you’re applying for – $300,000 – $500,000$; 500,000 -$1 million; $1 million -$1.5 million or $1.5 million – $2 million.

To complete your application, answer all ethics and compliance questions, supply optional information and submit.

In Summary

Over the last five years, Google.org has given over $55 million to nonprofit organisations that support gender equity and access to opportunity for women and girls around the world.

Applications are open until Friday, April 9 for interested candidates to submit their proposals and ideas. Each selected organisation will receive between $300,000 and $2 million in funding and other support from Google. Selected organisations will be announced later this year.
