Hi guys! Trust you had a great week. Are you planning a getaway or working through the weekend? Whatever your plan, take a moment to sit back and relax as we bring you the many trends that have been making the rounds across social media.
#IWD2021: #ChoosetoChallenge
Monday marked another International Women’s Day (IWD), with this year’s campaign themed #ChoosetoChallenge.
It was a day people and organisations around the world celebrated women’s achievements and came out to challenge gender bias and inequality in the society as well as advocate for the economic empowerment of women and girls worldwide.
In honour of IWD, tech companies including Google, Facebook and Bolt unveiled initiatives to celebrate women leaders and enhance female representation in private and public sectors.
Flutterwave becomes a Unicorn
The biggest news from the Nigerian tech ecosystem in 2021 so far surfaced during this week as Nigerian fintech company, Flutterwave closed a 170 million Series C, attaining a valuation of over $1 billion to become Africa’s third unicorn.
Five months after Paystack secured Nigeria’s biggest ever startup exit, the Flutterwave feat marked another momentous win for the Nigerian tech space. The feat was widely celebrated by tech leaders, entrepreneurs and enthusiasts across social media.
Celebrations then led to brands riding on the wave of the social media frenzy.
However, a congratulatory message from Lagos state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu was received with much derision.
Zikoko’s Jesus “Slander”
During the week, a Zikoko video stirred up controversy among social media users. The now-deleted video showed four Nigerians speaking about which fictional character would be the most boring to meet, and two of the four who spoke termed Jesus a fictional character.
Many Christians didn’t find it funny and went ahead to show their displeasure.
Others did not see the content as being inappropriate since Zikoko is a secular platform where people with varying religious beliefs work.
That’s all we’ve got guys. Have yourselves a lovely weekend and whatever you do, don’t forget to stay social.
