Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami finds himself at the centre of widespread controversy over his Salafi jihadist opinions which expressed support for terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda and Boko haram.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and several Nigerians have demanded the sack of the minister who issued the NIN-SIM linking order. With access to the personal information of millions of subscribers, many opine that the safety of Nigerians could be jeopardised if Pantami continues to remain in office.
This is despite the government releasing a statement backing the Minister after he admitted to making the controversial statements but maintained that his views on such matters have changed.
Calls for Pantami’s dismissal intensified after a document surfaced online linking the Minister to the death of former Kaduna State Governor, Patrick Yakowa.
However, the document has been rejected as fake by the Kaduna state Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA). Many other Nigerians have countered calls for Pantami’s sack by expressing their support for the under-fire Minister using the #IstandwithPantami hashtag.
This section of Nigerians says it is a targeted campaign aimed at truncating the national identity goals of clamping down on related crimes.
European Super League
The much-maligned European Super League (ESL) crumbled before it even started as all six Premier League clubs, two Italian clubs, and one Spanish club withdrew from the competition.
Football fans worldwide, pundits and governing bodies such as UEFA and FIFA finally got what they wanted after heavy criticism for the ESL triggered the exit of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City, Chelsea, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus and Athletico Madrid from the new development.
Only Spanish top clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona remain in the competition.
Global investment bank, JP Morgan has also terminated its $5 billion ESL commitment.
Chad’s President, Idriss Deby Dies in Clash with Rebels
Chad’s President, Idriss Déby was killed on Tuesday after leading out troops against rebel fighters. His death came a day after winning his 6th term as President.
The 68-year old Déby spent over three decades in power and was one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. Condolences swarmed in from African and global leaders for the late Chadian President.
His son, Mahamat Idriss Déby, known as “General Kaka” is set to take over as President.
