The number of active internet users in the country witnessed a 7.99 per cent dip in the fourth quarter of 2021 to retain its quarterly drop year on year. This is according to the recently released telecommunications report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

According to the details from the report, the total number of active internet users in Nigeria was 140.28 million in Q4 2021, down 14 million from the 154.3 million reported in the same quarter of 2020.

However, these figures show a 1.19 per cent increase from the previous quarter, with the number of active internet users rising from 140,275,459 in Q3 2021 to 141,971,560 in Q4 2021.

From the data recorded, MTN Nigeria remained the leading telecom company with the highest number of active subscribers in all of the six geo-political zones in the country.

The telecommunication giant recorded a significant total accumulation of 58,812,428 active internet users in the quarter. That accounted for 41.42 per cent of the total fourth quarter gross, which stood at 141,971,560.

Other internet providers trailed behind the figures, with the closest comparison in the quarter being that of Glo, which recorded an active user count of 39,525,269. Airtel, which touts itself as the smartphone network, stood in third place for the quarter and had a record of 37,526,624.

Fixed wired internet service providers EMTS and IPNX also continued to clamor for subscribers in the country with a joint accumulation of 5,761,903 active internet users recorded in the quarter.

Smile maintained its lead over other Voip internet providers during the period, recording 314,647 active internet subscribers, with Ntel trailing behind with 27,799.

Data for active subscribers for telephony services by operators also shows that MTN was the highest gainer in the quarter inclusive, solidifying its leading position quarter over quarter for the year 2021.

The telecom, with 73,549,682 active subscribers, outnumbered Globacom, Airtel, and mobile, which had 54,817,353; 52,926,886; and 12,789,344 subscribers, respectively.

In the quarter, Airtel witnessed the highest incoming porting activities by network, with 9mobile witnessing the highest outgoing porting activities of up to 969 users.

In terms of internet usage per state, Lagos had the highest number of subscribers in terms of active voice per state in Q4 2021, followed by Kano and Ogun, while Bayelsa and Ebonyi had the least number of subscribers, similar to that of the fourth quarter.
