Spotify, the music streaming giant, has released this year’s edition of Wrapped -an annual round-up of the top artists, albums, songs and playlists of the year as streamed by users on the platform from around the world.
It was another excellent year for Afrobeats, with artists like Burna Boy, Asake, Ayra Starr, WizkidRema, Tems, and other Nigerian musicians dominating the music scene and even getting Grammy award nominations.
According to the statistics from Spotify, there is a 291% year-over-year rise in local music consumption, Nigerians listened to nearly three times as much local music in 2022 as they did in 2021.
Speaking on the massive growth in the Nigerian music industry, Victor Okpala, Spotify’s Artist & Label Partnerships Manager, said,
2022 ushered us into an era of cultural overdrive and we’re excited for fans and artists alike to share these insights on the music they created and listened to this year.
As the year comes to a close with the Wrapped 2022 roundup, the question remains: who currently rules the Naija music throne? As expected, Nigerian musicians dominate the list of most-streamed artists in the country, Drake is the only foreign musician that makes the top 10.

Nigerian artists who made waves according to Spotify Wrapped 2022
Burna Boy
Given that the musician has lit up the world this 2022, it is no wonder that the African giant is claiming the top spot as the most streamed artist in Nigeria. The African Giant was the second-most streamed artist in Nigeria last year, and his studio album, Love Damini, helped catapult him to the top of the charts. Burna Boy’s ‘Last Last,’ which earned a Grammy nomination, was the most-streamed song.
Asake
Asake has been a revelation in 2022, the YBNL star dominated the music scene with “back-to-back hits,” several features, and two EPs released. He remained a constant at the forefront of the minds of music lovers, and it is no surprise that five of the songs he had a hand in made the top 10 of the list of the top 50 Nigerian tracks of 2022.
Ayra Starr
Ayra Starr picked up where she left off in 2021. The Bloody Samaritan crooner was the second-most streamed female artist in Nigeria last year and she appears to have upped her game in Nigeria and internationally this year. This year, she is Nigeria’s most streamed female artist. Her track, Rush, and her collaboration hit with Magixx, made the top 50 Nigerian tracks of 2022.
Tems
Tems Baby has continued to establish her dominance, especially in the global music industry. She earned a grammy nomination for her role in ‘Wait for You,’ ‘performed with Future and Drake. The song has been named the top Nigerian song export of the year.
Wizkid
The list cannot be complete with Wizkid, the Star Boy of Africa. His ‘Made in Lagos’ album released last year remains one of the most streamed albums in 2022. His song, Bad to Me, was also a hit among Spotify users. He has more than 3 songs that made it to the list of the 50 top tracks of 2022 Nigeria.
