Twitter has announced that paid users can now post longer tweets of up to 4000 words.

After initially having 280 character limit, the company has said that its Blue subscribers can now tweet above that limit.

The new adjustments also apply to replies and quoted tweets. Twitter said that along with the increased number of characters comes the ability to post media like images and videos.

All users can view the long tweets, even though only Twitter Blue subscribers can tweet them. Only the first 280 characters will be displayed on the timeline; if you want to read more, click “Show more,” as in the tweet below.

The newly introduced character limit applies to paid users in the U.S. for now. The company has not disclosed when the adjustments will roll out in other places yet.

The social media platform said on its Blue support page that it would soon reduce ads for Blue subscribers to half of the current number they currently see. CEO Elon Musk had previously talked about a costlier ad-free subscription plan as well.

How the 4000 long-content could affect user experience on Twitter

The new introduction gives Twitter Blue subscribers a pretty appealing option to have all of their tweets in one post rather than threads, which may occasionally be confusing. Tweeps had previously converted their tweets to threads to send a more comprehensive message.

Most inexperienced users have ordered their tweets haphazardly also to include their views in a thread, leading to a more muddled message that is difficult to understand.

Writing is now simple and seamless for even new users of the platform, thanks to the new functionality that allows you to have a single tweet that contains all of your views. Additionally, it eliminates the issue of jumbled tweets and reduces the disorderliness of the timeline because only 280 characters are visible before a “show more” prompt appears.

However, since non-Blue users cannot take advantage of this feature and must continue to use threads, the users’ timeline may become even more perplexing and boring to some, who may believe that the platform is encouraging segregation.

There have already been criticisms that paying for something formerly free for all people fosters classism and needless and uneven consciousnesses. Before now, the Blue Badge served as a mechanism to safeguard and identify those who were public figures, though not necessarily because they had the financial resources to obtain it.

The new characters feature, which is now seemingly for paid users, all but confirms that the platform is gradually shifting away from being a free and impartial town hall to a majorly capitalist platform.

Previously, Twitter Blue also introduced the ability to post 60-minute-long videos. Musk surely wants bloggers and video creators to post their content on the platform — but at a price.

Some months ago, the platform introduced the edit functionality for paid subscribers. Users who paid for the Twitter Blue subscription can edit their posts. The edit button was one of the perks, including fewer advertisements and greater video quality to be made available to Twitter Blue subscribers for only $8 per month.

Twitter Blue also expanded to India, Brazil, and Indonesia — making it 15 markets where the subscription is available. In India, Twitter Blue costs ₹650 ($7.87) per month, which is far higher than the price point of other subscriptions like YouTube Premium, Spotify, or Apple Music. All of the latter cost less than $4 per month. For comparison, Netflix’s highest tier plan, which allows you to watch the streaming services in 4K quality on four screens, also costs ₹650 per month.
