Nigerian banks to operate on weekends, post-election drama

Hi guys, trust you had a great week despite the cash crunch that has kept Nigerian banks on the receiving end of many insults. The elections are finally over, and some parties have filed lawsuit petitions against the process and the outcome of the elections.

It has driven more and more conversations; in fact, politics and post-election drama are still topics that have dominated the social media space. Apart from politics, other topics generated conversations on Social media last week. Do you know Lori Harvey and our own Yoruba demon, Damson Idris, have ended their relationship or that Nigeria played a match with Guinea Bissau and LOST???

Yeah, sit tight, and let me dish out all the hot gist to you.

Nigerian bankers on a 24/7 work schedule

Nigerians had hoped that Naira notes would circulate better after the elections and the Supreme Court’s statement that the old notes remain legal tender till the end of the year. Well, that was probably just a figment of our collective imaginations because it is still very difficult to get both the old notes and the newly redesigned ones.

Thankfully, the Central Bank of Nigeria seems to be doing everything to stabilize the cash scarcity problems. According to public sources, a CBN spokesperson has claimed that the agency has distributed banknotes to commercial banks, and directed them to open on weekends to ease circulation.

This feels like a good approach considering the challenges already caused by this shortage. Over the weekend, banks across Nigeria opened their doors to customers so that they could withdraw cash and execute transactions. However, many Nigerians still lament that ATMs are still empty.

Let’s hope that this phase will pass swiftly now that the CBN governor has reassured Nigerians that the circulation will improve over the next few days.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria at home or abroad

One of the top social media conversations last week surrounded the whereabouts of Oluwakayode Ariwoola, the Chief Justice of Nigeria. Recall that the Labour Party presidential candidate and the PDP presidential candidate sued their opposition party, APC, and the INEC for the process and outcome of the recently concluded presidential elections.

Last week, several bloggers reported that that the president-elect travelled abroad for a medical check-up. Although, the APC team claimed it was a much-needed vacation, especially after the rigorous presidential campaigns. The Nigerian social media space got lit when some platforms reported that Olukayode Ariwoola, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, flew outside of the country to meet with the President-elect and discuss the lawsuits in a private meeting.

What else can I say? We don’t know if he flew out or not, but we do know that the Nigerian Chief Judge was in the country yesterday and present at the Jumaat Prayer Service. However, a lot of Nigerians have turned to social media to criticize and query the Nigerian judicial system’s transparency, especially during this period.

What do you think about the lawsuits flying here and there?

Super Eagles: Nothing like a “Home” advantage

The qualifiers for the 2024 African Cup of Nations started during this international break, and the Super Eagles of Nigeria welcomed Guinea Bissau to the National Stadium in Abuja on Friday. Surprisingly, the stadium was barely half-full, considering that the Super Eagles have not been in action since before the World Cup.

Unfortunately, matters got worse when the visitors took a first-half lead, and the Super Eagles chased the game for more than an hour. Guinea Bissau secured their first win against the Super Eagles, breaking the hearts of Nigerian fans.

Nigeria is ranked no. 35 in the FIFA Men’s World Rankings, and Guinea-Bissau is ranked no. 118.

It could be that the turnout was poor because Nigerians have ‘bigger things to worry about at the moment?’ All hope is not lost for the Super Eagles as the qualifiers have only just begun and there are more games to rectify this loss.

We can do better. Let us all believe in the Super Eagles.

Breakfast served too early

Just three months after Lori Harvey and Damson Idris publicly announced they were in a relationship, the love birds seemed to have called it quits. Twitter and Instagram were filled with comments like “God When”, especially as our very own Naija boy, Damson, was involved.

The 26-year-old Lori Harvey -stepdaughter of Steve Harvey- has a history of dating celebrity men. Since 2016, the model has dated over 8 guys, including rapper, Future, Diddy, and Michael B. Jordan. Damson Idris is the newest on the list.

Some fans believe these relationships are contract-based and just for the clout that comes with it, maybe in promoting a film, music or brand.

At this point, it is unsure what happened, but rumours have it that the duo had a mutual agreement to call it quits. However, social media fans have begun to analyze the relationship and hint that maybe the recent sex scene that Damson Idris acted with Chloe Bailey might have caused the “breakfast to be served this early”.

Till next week. Bye.
