Chef Dammy vs Hilda Baci

The Nigerian social media space serves drama constantly and it did not disappoint last week with new cats coming to the fore. There was a lot of buzz online that even overshadowed the skyrocketing fuel prices and the subsequent increase in transport fares. People have just shifted their focus from that to the social media world for real.

After the support that she received some weeks ago, who would’ve thought that Hilda Baci’s title was up for grabs? We thought Chef Dammy was playing oh, but it seems she means to break the yet-to-be-certified record and has now cooked for over 55 hours. Wawu.

And let’s not even get started on Davido and his support for the “new cats” taking afrobeats to the next level. If you don’t know what I am talking about, keep reading. One of the new cats, “Burner” Boy seems to be making waves regardless of the ongoing drama, breaking the record as the first-ever African artiste to perform at the UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul.

These new cats are what the music industry needs to take African music to the global stage. Back to the story, here are some of the trendiest gists that ignited conversations and sparked heated discussions in the social media world.

The spoon and knife fight has begun, who is the master chef?

We have not even digested the food we ate at Hilda Baci’s 100 hours Cook-a-thon or processed her victory which happened last month. In fact, the Guinness World Record has not officially awarded her with the title of the longest cooking marathon by an individual and now we have a “new cat” in town.

Chef Damilola Adeparusi, aka, Chef Dammy, a 300-level student at the Federal University of Oye Ekiti, along with spiritual support from the Spirit Word Global Mission church group is attempting to break Hilda’s unofficial record to cook for 120 hours. As of today, Chef Dammy has been cooking for over 55 hours and seems to not be giving up anytime soon.

I mean, is Chef Dammy an evangelist or a chef at this point because she uses her break time for praise and worship, but that is not even the problem. At first, we thought it was a joke oh, like is Chef Dammy really doing this, or is this cruise? But having gone past 55 hours, it is getting real.

However, many social media users seem to have different opinions about this. Of course, there are some who are in full support as they did for Hilda Baci, but there are others who believe Chef Dammy just wants to ride on the fame and take the glory away from Hilda Baci. Some others have made it a tribalistic war, and others have made it a fight against decency and indecency. At this point, may the best spoon and knife win.

The African giant, a “new cat”?

It was like a feline face-off in the social media space between 30 BG and Outsiders after Davido claimed he was one of the first young Afrobeats artists, alongside Wizkid to hit it big in the mainstream, while Burna Boy got thrown in with the young kittens like Rema, Fireboy, and Asake.

Is there really a hierarchy in the music industry? Back then, I only knew Davido, Wizkid, DonJazzy, Olamide, and P-Square ruling the airwaves, delivering hit after hit.

Well, I guess these are the old cats association. But hold on for a minute, putting Burna Boy in the same cattery as Rema, Fireboy, and Asake? That’s wild, don’t you think? B-Red, another musician and Davido’s cousin has now added fuel to the fire after he said in a recent podcast that the first day he met Burna boy was in Port-Harcourt, he was a huge fan of him and Davido.

A whole Odogwu, African giant. Sure, Burna Boy’s music started hitting the airwaves in 2012, abi was Davido trying to say the time Burna Boy had his meteoric rise to fame qualifies him as a new cat? Well, Burna Boy’s fans stormed social media, bombarding Davido with all the global recognition their man has received. Even Music video director, Adasa Cookey who shot Burna Boy’s first music video seems to not be okay with Davido’s comment.

They were throwing shade left and right, making Davido’s fans defend their superstar. But guess who gets to sit back and enjoy the show? Yep, it’s Wizkid fans, finally breathing some fresh air, because this time, there’s no need for them to jump into an argument online.

Godwin Emefiele suspended and arrested

President Tinubu has wasted no time flexing his political muscles. Recently, he has unleashed a wave of new appointments. including his selection of Femi Gbajabiamila as the Chief of Staff.

But that is not all oh, remember the controversial naira swap (old note to new note) orchestrated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) that many members of the APC team frowned at? Well, President Tinubu might just be digging into it and other controversial policies the apex bank has issued recently after suspending Godwin Emefiele as the Central Bank Governor,

Just hours after the suspension, a video of the CBN governor hauled up in a private jet surfaced. Following that, the Department of State Services (DSS) revealed on its official Twitter account that they have apprehended Godwin Emefiele for some investigative reasons.

Deputy Governor Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi will be taking up the mantle for now as the Acting Central Bank Governor. Oh, and did I mention the social media reactions surrounding Emefiele’s suspension and arrest? Let’s be honest, Nigerians blamed him for some of the hardship they faced during his tenure, foreign currencies are harder to acquire and let’s not forget the cash scarcity.

Although some are celebrating this new beginning, including Aboki FX throwing subtle shades, others who were once in support of the opposing team, have begun to see “the light” in this new administration.

Why shouldn’t gospel artists charge 10 million Naira?

Is 10 million Naira too small of a fee for Rema to perform at an event? Probably not, but what about a gospel artist like Mercy Chinwo? Some may argue that it’s too much for her. I mean, yes, she sings for the Lord, but hey, it’s still her career, and she deserves to be compensated for her talents, right?

This debate began after a viral video of a Reverend Father expressing his concern that worship has become expensive. He even questioned how much someone like Mercy Chinwo would charge, to which the congregation responded with a staggering 10 million naira. Now, we can’t be entirely certain if that’s the exact amount Mercy Chinwo charges, but it certainly stirred up a commotion on social media.

Supporters of Mercy Chinwo passionately defended her, while others who had experienced her services debunked the rumours. Amidst the heated discussions, one thing is clear: the price tag on worship, especially when it comes to a talented artist like Mercy Chinwo, is a topic that sparks both curiosity and controversy.
