Airtel becomes 3rd telco offering 5G services in Nigeria

Airtel Nigeria, the third largest mobile operator in the country in terms of subscriptions, introduced its commercial 5G services on Monday at an event in Lagos. Carl Cruz, the Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Nigeria, assured that the launch is part of the network’s initiative to make 5G services accessible to everyone in Nigeria.

With the introduction of Airtel’s 5G services, Nigeria now has three licensed providers offering this technology after MTN Nigeria and Mafab Communications announced the launch of their 5G services earlier.

Airtel disclosed that the 5G services would be available in three Nigerian states -Lagos, Ogun, Rivers- and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The company’s chief said its subscribers would enjoy super-fast data services and redefined services in other sectors of the economy including telemedicine, agric, and others.

Currently, Airtel offers a connection fee of ₦‎30,000 for its 5G mobile network, which includes up to 250 GB of bonus data and an immediate 10 GB data upon activation. Moreover, users will receive a 100% bonus on purchases of ₦10,000 and above plans for the first six months.

The newly launched 5G network is currently compatible with Huawei, iPad, iPhone, Samsung, Tecno, and Xiaomi devices. This launch by Airtel Nigeria aims to intensify the competition in the Nigerian telecommunications market.

Airtel’s market share in the telecoms industry

According to data from the Nigeria Communication Commission, Airtel Nigeria currently holds a market share of 27.01% of the nation’s subscribers. The company’s market share is surpassed only by MTN and Globacom, which control 39.79% and 27.28% respectively.

Earlier this year, the company acquired a 5G spectrum, as well as an additional spectrum for its 4G network, for a total sum of $316.7 million from the Nigeria Communication Commission.

At the media launch on Monday, the company also announced its 5G router that would help subscribers connect to the superfast internet network.

Some of the device’s features include the ability to connect up to 64 devices simultaneously; Lightning-fast 5G speeds, unlocking a new level of performance which allows users to enjoy the benefits of 5G without the need to invest in a new 5G smartphone; 10GB sign-on bonus when subscribers complete the Know Your Customer (KYC) process; and unparalleled network stability, guaranteeing a reliable and uninterrupted connection.

Airtel users can access the new high-speed network via a 5G router or a range of 5G-compatible smartphones and tablets. Upon activating a 5G device on the network, customers will receive a one-time data bonus of 10GB. Coverage is currently available in Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt, but will be expanded to other locations in the future.
