'What of politicians that prank us everyday?' Nigerians react as police threatens to arrest online prankster Trinity Guy

Nigerians online are reacting to the call for arrest of popular skit maker and online prankster, Trinity Guy by the Nigerian police. The prankster who presently boast 490,000 followers and over 1,000 plus skits uploaded on his Instagram is renowned for posting pranks that many consider extreme and dangerous especially to his own self.

His extreme form of pranks and skit making forced the police to demand his arrest for endangering the lives of others. Describing them as criminal, immoral and evil, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi urged people who have fallen victim of Trinity Guy’s pranks to bring up criminal charges against him

“This doesn’t make any sense. I think the guy should have been arrested. Those individuals who feel the heat and fear of the pranks should be reporting the pranksters as many of their pranks are criminals, immoral, and evil. These women have a good case against him.”

The police PRO has previously warned skit makers specialising on pranks, especially those using either fake or real guns, to regulate them in order to avoid endangering their life and the lives of other people. He warned that the insensitivity of Nigerian pranksters to the citizens creates problems for the police on security management. The Force spokesperson advised skit makers to show empathy in their crafts or put and end to the harmful ones.

“This is getting out of hand and we need to talk to ourselves on these pranks. Most of you that do pranks must be very careful. Moderate what you do. There are things you do that will constitute offence and you will not be able to hold it because the law is not respecter of anybody. The law will not pity you. The law will not consider you for anything,” he had said.

The video which prompted the call for his arrest depicted Trinity Guy begging an unseen person to not kill him as passersby approached. As the passersby got close enough, Trinity’s pleas were followed by sounds of gun shots, as he dropped limp on the ground, playing dead. The passersby got frightened and fled in different directions, even tripping and falling.

In another scene of the same video, Trinity Guy was seen running to a woman in an uncompleted building to take shelter, claiming a group of bad people were after his life..

Another scene shows where he stood before a stranger and asks for his manhood, while the man takes off his feet and shouts for help. He continuously harasses the man by running after him and telling him he was going to shoot him.

Nigerians react to the call for the arrest of Trinity Guy

Reactions have continued to trail the call for the arrest of Trinity Guy who happens to be many people’s favourite prankster. While some people are in support of his arrest and prosecution as a deterrent to others like him, others feel there was no need to go that far, after all he never meant or executed any real harm.

Wills Ogb agreed that the arrest of Trinity Guy is indeed long overdue. “This very one guy is a terror to people in the name of pranks. He has bullied, harassed females, and injured people in the name of pranking people. This one guy needs to be locked behind bars.”

There are those like Mazi Chukwuemeka who wanted the police to make certain Trinity Guy’s skits aren’t scripted before arresting him and those who feel the police should arrest him first and then he should explain to them in detention that the pranks are scripted.

Others still dug out MC Oluomo’s Mama Chukwuemeka video in which he threatened to harm members of a particular ethnic group if they didn’t vote for his preferred candidate at the March 2023 presidential election. They also reminded the same police PRO, Adejobi Olumuyiwa that he was the one who came out to defend Oluomo, saying his threat was only a joke.

“I saw a video of MC Oluomo with one mama Chidinma – an Igbo woman debunking that threat, that it’s not true, it’s just a joke he was making with a particular woman. So, let us take it as a joke, like he said

Finally, there is the epic response by True Nigerian Heroes who berated the police for not going after politicians who prank us on a daily basis.

What of politicians wey Dey prank us on a daily basis? Promise a lot during campaign and hit the ground running with good speed and end up doing nothing

Donddre introduced the highandedness of the police itself and wondered why the activities of pranksters are considered bigger crimes. “Police men dey out there harassing innocent people, but the choose to ignore that and focus on skitmakers. Warra county.”

It remains to be seen if any of Trinity Guy’s victims would turn up to charge him. That seems unlikely though because in most of his pranks, very little harm is done. A lot of pranksters and skit makers are also known to dole out cash to placate some of their victims. Trinity Guy has been seen in several videos doing just that.

Finally, as someone suggested, some of the pranks could be scripted and as such, it would be hard to prosecute. But regardless, pranksters ought to be careful and avoid pranks that could lead to real and irreversible problems.
