GT Bank scares customers as it announces yet another app update
Guaranty Trust Bank

Customers of Guaranty Trust Bank (GT Bank), one of Nigeria’s foremost commercial banks have been thrown into scare following an update it said it was making to its current banking app, which would see it discontinue its support.

The bank made this known through mail to all its customers. According to the mail, it would release the new and updated version of the GTWorld mobile app to the Play Store and App Store.

An excerpt of the mail reads: “On the 12th of July (Wednesday), we will release the new and updated version of the GTWorld Mobile Banking App to Play Store and App Store…Please note that we will discontinue support of the current version of the GTWorld App on August 12th.”

According to that statement, the bank would discontinue the old GTWorld app in a month, just three months after discontinuing the GT Bank app for it. This marks the second time GT Bank has ended services on its app due to complaints from users that the app is beset with flaws and abnormalities, sometimes leading to unsuccessful transfers or withdrawals.

GT Bank scare customers as it shuts down banking app, again

The first time was in May when the bank announced that its customers would no longer be able to access its online services via the GTBank Mobile App from May 1, 2023.

Customers of GT Bank are now voicing their surprise and annoyance at not being able to utilise their banking app to complete transactions. Many expressed shock that the bank did not yet have the update easily available while already touting a cessation of the services, according to several of the responses.

A user on Twitter expressed: “GTB is messaging about ending support for the old app tomorrow but hasn’t deployed the updates. What do they think is going to happen with that sort of migration? I wish them the best.’

Another customer wrote, “Apparently, we will all stay locked out until GT World is done hoisting and upgrading their app…@gtbank, how about updating apps in the midnight, when there is reduced traffic and fallout is manageable?”

Technext observed that the app in the Google Play store was still the outdated version that had been updated on August 22, 2022, when we inquired if the latest update had become accessible for users to download.

Gt Bank App - GTWorld

What we know about GT Bank

GT Bank first shut down its app, the GTBank Mobile App and prompted its customers to completely switch to the GT World app on May 1, 2023. The decision at that time might not be unconnected to the many complaints by customers about the app’s performance across social media channels.

The bank launched GTWorld, Nigeria’s first fully biometric mobile banking app capable of processing digital transactions, in May 2017. The app was designed to cater to all that’s vital to customers easily and seamlessly.

But, from complaints on social media platforms, particularly on Twitter, the bank has been the target of major backlash from its customers, who complain daily about failed transactions, withdrawals or even logging in.

Recently, a Nigerian actress, Kemi Afolabi called out the bank for failing to reverse or return her money after she mistakenly transferred the sum of N510,000 to a customer’s account in April, and to her dismay, both parties happened to use the same bank.

In a plea for assistance, Afolabi took to her Instagram page and posted:

“I mistakenly transferred the sum of five hundred and ten thousand naira to a customer’s account! We both use the same bank. Since April 1st, 2023. Eyin fans mi e ma gba mi keh. My tired is exhausted honestly!”

The new update has yet to appear on the Play Store or the App Store, so it’s unclear whether this will be a happy development for the company’s customers who believe it will put an end to the delivery of subpar services or a nightmare if they find themselves unable to complete their transactions in the near future.
