The Africa Bitcoin Community held a pre-conference event in Lagos, Nigeria on Friday, September 29, to discuss the role of developers in contributing and accelerating Bitcoin adoption in Africa.
The event, which was held at E Centre, 1 – 11 Commercial Avenue Sabo, Yaba had in attendance Bitcoin developers, enthusiasts, professionals as well as pressmen.
The gathering was organised as a build-up to the grand Africa Bitcoin Conference #ABC2023 that will be coming up in Accra, Ghana in December.
The Africa Bitcoin Conference is an annual conference that brings together Bitcoiners from around the world and tries to see how best they can contribute their knowledge and see what other young community members are doing with Bitcoin technology to help the agenda of achieving financial freedom on the continent.
Recap of Africa Bitcoin Conference 2022
The 2022 Africa Bitcoin Conference was held for 3 days and it had over 800 participants. It featured speeches, panel discussions and presentations. Important personalities in the Bitcoin space were in attendance and participation was 70% for females, which was an exciting turnout.

The 2022 which was the maiden edition had over 70 speakers with Jack Dorsey, cofounder of Twitter (now X) one of the notable speakers. According to the Africa Bitcoin Community, over 60 speakers have been confirmed already this year.
According to the team, there were a lot of countries in attendance but Nigeria was part of the countries with a large number of representatives of speakers and participants.
Also, one of the key things that happened last year and will happen again this year is the Hackathon, an opportunity for Bitcoin developers and enthusiasts to present ideas to create things that Africa needs. Suffice it to say the Hackathon adds financial support for winners.
Additionally, The Afro Bitcoin Fellowship is one of these opportunities. The initiative of the Africa Bitcoin Community is a one-year fellowship program that takes people from having zero knowledge of Bitcoin to the expertise stage.
What to expect in Africa Bitcoin Conference 2023
The 2023 edition of the event, which is going to be covered by notable media outlets internationally, is still going to be held for 3 days.
The first and second day is going to be developer days, with discussions and conversation. However, on the final day, there is going to be a new activity which is known as Fair.
The Fair is a market where people can transact, buy and sell various items and services, using Bitcoin. A scenery where people could go to a bar, take a drink and pay with sats (bitcoin units). A first-of-its-kind Bitcoin market in Ghana which is going to give opportunities to over 50 businesses.
Also, the fair will be an opportunity to network and meet new people. Although the first two-day conference is paid, the Bitcoin Fair will be open to the general public.
Importance of attending Africa Bitcoin Conference 2023
According to Prince Akpah, the programs manager of the Africa Bitcoin Community, there were people with no prior idea or knowledge about Bitcoin. Still, thanks to their attendance at the Africa Bitcoin Conference 2022, have been able to build projects, products and communities out of Bitcoin.

Additionally, the community that has erupted out of the African continent shows that Africa is a fertile ground for Bitcoin innovation, per Prince.
Commenting on the innovative Bitcoin Fair at the event coming up in December, Prince says:
“To create opportunities for participants and other people to come together and create a physical market experience.”
Also, he says there will be opportunities for developers to pitch their products,ideas and solutions.
