Gaming might be a relatively new concept in Nigeria, but that concept is quickly gaining ground with more enthusiasts emerging every day. They include developers who build the gaming platforms as well as partakers who simply want to enjoy the games. But as most partakers, and even developers would tell you, they hardly make money off these endeavours.
The Technext Coinference 3.0 which was held on Monday, featured a panel session on the topic: “Making money from Gaming.” Experts at the session emphasized the significant opportunities for profit in the Nigerian e-sports industry.
The panellists included Shola Edu, Founder and Creative Director of Deluxe Creation Studios, Kunmi Adenipebi, Founder and COO of Gamr, and Oscar Micheals, co-founder of Africa Comicade.
The discussion revolved around the immense potential in the gaming sector and the practical steps for individuals to generate income as players or developers using cutting-edge technology.

When talking about revenues generated from the industry, Kunmi Adenipebi pointed out that Nigeria spends over $200 million on game consumption but has no fixed data to show how much we as a country generate from the industry. Still on monetization strategies in the space. Kunmi said:
“It is very difficult to monetize e-sports in Nigeria but as time goes on we will definitely start seeing a lot of monetization because we have started seeing a lot of people playing tournaments and winning.”
Another key point highlighted during the session was that marketing a game is distinct from marketing a movie. Oscar Micheals stressed the global demand for entertaining content and the role e-sports plays in meeting this demand. He said:
“Everyone needs to consume entertaining content…The world needs new stories, people in the diaspora need to stay connected to their roots… Games are the way to go, comics are the way to go.”

Speaking on several ways to make money from the industry as a developer, Shola Edu highlighted various monetization methods such as ads, download sales, in-app purchases, publishers, and brand placements.
He further emphasized that although the industry requires developers and designers. there are non-technical roles within the e-sports sector such as marketing and influencing. He said:
“Away from the technical aspects of gaming, such as animation and programming, we need people who can handle the managerial parts of the sector. If those areas aren’t functioning well, the industry will suffer.”
Furthermore, one of the panellists emphasized the growing nature of the industry. He said,
“The Gaming industry is very lucrative. With the name coined; “E-Sports Industry”, tournaments, completions, and challenges will proceed with opportunities for monetization.“
