In a surprising turn of events, OpenAI has announced that Sam Altman, the company’s ousted co-founder, will be reinstated as CEO. The board will also be restructured, with Bret Taylor as Chair, and Larry Summers and Adam D’Angelo as members.

The statement was made known by the company’s official X account some minutes ago. According to the statement, it says it is still working to figure out the modalities and necessary details to have the former leadership back.

This decision comes in response to the outcry from over 75% of OpenAI’s workforce, demanding Altman’s reinstatement following his sudden dismissal. The OpenAI employees, initially represented by 505 (which later grew to over 700) key figures within the company, issued a collective ultimatum to the board, threatening mass resignations unless Altman and President Greg Brockman were reinstated.

Their strong-worded statement highlighted concerns about the board’s competence and the potential impact of recent leadership changes on the company’s mission and stability.

In what may seem to confirm his reinstatement, Sam Altman has expressed his commitment to return to his former role, continue with his team, and build on the successes they have achieved together so far.

This agreement signals a pivotal moment for OpenAI, potentially marking a return to stability and paving the way for Altman’s re-assumption of leadership, leveraging his pivotal role in the company’s groundbreaking work in AI safety, governance, and product development.

The over-five-day fracas started on Friday with the dismissal of Sam Altman as the CEO of the company by its board. The decision stems from a thorough review by the board, which cited Altman’s lack of consistency in communications as a hindrance to the board’s responsibilities.

According to the company’s official statement, “The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.” This departure has left Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati stepping in as interim CEO with immediate effect as the company is set to initiate a search for a permanent successor to the CEO position.

This was followed by the appointment of Emmett Shear, former Twitch CEO, as interim CEO of OpenAI, as reported by The Information. In a surprising twist, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella later confirmed in a tweet the integration of former OpenAI executives Sam Altman and Greg Brockman into a new advanced AI research team at the company.

However, in a bold and unprecedented move, 505 (which later grew to over 700) OpenAI employees, representing over 75% of the company’s workforce, issued a collective ultimatum to the company’s board of directors, threatening mass resignation if the former CEO, Sam Altman, and President Greg Brockman are not reinstated.

It now seems the overly dragged-out situation has finally come to an end with the reinstatement of Sam and the initial leadership at the helm of affairs.

This agreement signals a pivotal moment for OpenAI, potentially marking a return to stability and paving the way for Altman’s re-assumption of leadership, leveraging his pivotal role in the company’s groundbreaking work in AI safety, governance, and product development.
