According to Filmone Entertainment, Ryan Coogler’s supernatural horror film “Sinners”, starring Michael B. Jordan, has grossed NGN736 million at the Nigerian box office after six weeks. This cements its status as a cultural and commercial juggernaut.

The film blends vampire horror with Southern Gothic and Black musical traditions and has captivated Nigerian audiences, holding the top spot in cinemas for over a month and signalling a growing appetite for genre-defying blockbusters.

Set in the Mississippi Delta during the Great Depression, “Sinners” follows twin brothers Elijah (“Smoke”) and Elias (“Stack”), both played by Jordan, who return to their hometown to open a juke joint after a stint with Chicago gangsters.

Their venture takes a dark turn as they confront a sinister group of white vampires exploiting Black culture. The film, also starring Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo, weaves themes of racial oppression, resistance, and the power of Black music into a chilling narrative.

Coogler, renowned for “Black Panther” and “Creed”, delivers a bold departure from his previous work, earning a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score, 8/10 on Metacritic and an A CinemaScore, a rare feat for a horror film. Its IMAX 65mm visuals and haunting score have further elevated its appeal.

FilmOne Entertainment, Nigeria’s leading distributor, reports that “Sinners” opened with NGN79 million in its first week, surged to NGN567.4 million by week four, and reached NGN736 million by June 1, adding NGN19.2 million over the May 30-June 1 weekend.

This sustained dominance outpaces other 2025 releases like “Thunderbolts” (NGN142 million in two weeks) and places “Sinners” among Nigeria’s top-grossing films, though it trails “Black Panther’s” inflation-adjusted NGN818 million.

Globally, the film has amassed $338 million, outperforming most entries in “The Conjuring” franchise and nearing “The Nun’s” $366 million record. “Sinners” has surpassed its estimated $250 million break-even point with a reported $90-100 million budget. This defies scepticism about its profitability.

The film’s resonance in Nigeria stems from its universal themes of resilience and cultural pride, which echo strongly in a nation with a vibrant cinematic culture.

‘Sinners’ speaks to Nigerians because it’s about fighting back against exploitation while celebrating who we are,” said Lagos-based film enthusiast Chika Okeke. “The music and Michael B. Jordan’s performance make it unforgettable.”

Coogler’s established fan base, built on “Black Panther’s” historic NGN1 billion milestone in Nigeria, has fuelled its success. FilmOne’s strategic distribution ensures packed IMAX screenings.

A Production Manager (who asked not to be named) noted, “Sinners proves Nigerian audiences are ready for bold, original films that blend genre with cultural depth. Its success could inspire more risk-taking in Hollywood and Nollywood alike.”

The film’s ability to top charts in Lagos and Abuja, despite its 1930s American setting, proves its global appeal and FilmOne’s growing influence in bridging markets.

“Sinners” continues its theatrical run and will be made available digitally on platforms like Amazon Prime and Apple TV starting June 3. It is poised to challenge further box office records.
