The controversy surrounding the unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files intensified this week after Elon Musk, CEO of X, posted a provocative claim on the platform, alleging that US President Donald Trump’s presence in the documents is “the real reason” they remain under wraps.
Elon Musk’s post, which read, “Time to drop the really big bomb. @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!” has reignited public debate over the secrecy of the files, which are tied to the late financier’s sex trafficking crimes.
Jeffrey Epstein, who died by suicide in a New York prison cell in 2019 while awaiting trial, was connected to numerous high-profile figures, including Trump, former President Bill Clinton, and Britain’s Prince Andrew.

The Epstein files, largely stemming from a 2015 lawsuit filed by victim Virginia Giuffre against Ghislaine Maxwell, contain court documents, flight logs, and testimonies detailing Epstein’s network.
Maxwell, convicted of child sex trafficking, is serving a 20-year sentence. While some documents were unsealed in early 2024, revealing names like Donald Trump’s, the bulk remain redacted, prompting speculation about their contents.
Musk’s claim follows a report from seven days ago where former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani suggested the files’ release could have “big implications on our national security, foreign policy, allies.”
He said: “I think it still exists on Epstein… I think we are going to see it.
“And I think they’re struggling with – I really do believe that.”
Giuliani’s comments echo long-standing theories about why the documents, which detail Epstein’s interactions with powerful individuals, have not been fully disclosed. The financier’s private island, where much of the abuse allegedly occurred, has been a focal point of these discussions.
Court records released by Attorney General Pam Bondi in February 2025 confirmed that Trump flew on Epstein’s private jets at least seven times in the 1990s, consistent with previously public flight logs.
An analysis by People magazine found that Donald Trump was listed in the flight logs seven times. These include trips he made in Epstein’s jet on October 11, 1993, and May 15, 1994. Marla Maples, Trump’s wife at the time, and their daughter, Tiffany, reportedly flew with him in May.
No evidence in the released files suggests Donald Trump engaged in illegal activities, but his association with Epstein has drawn scrutiny. Meanwhile, in 2002, Trump described Epstein as a “terrific guy.” After Epstein was charged with sexually abusing dozens of underage girls in 2019, the president said he “wasn’t a fan” and that the pair hadn’t spoken for 15 years following a falling out.
Bondi, who has vowed to release the remaining files, faces criticism for delays, with some accusing her of withholding information for political reasons.

The files’ partial release has done little to quell conspiracy theories. Epstein’s brother has publicly questioned the official suicide ruling, citing inconsistencies, though FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Dan Bongino have dismissed claims of a covert murder plot.
Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s most prominent accusers, settled a lawsuit against Prince Andrew in 2022, though the royal denied wrongdoing. Tragically, Giuffre died by suicide earlier this year in Australia, following unverified reports of an accident.
