In the heart of Ogun State, Nigeria, a quiet agricultural revolution is taking root. The launch of AgriConnect, a digital agriculture initiative spearheaded by the MTN Foundation in partnership with the Federal Government, the Ogun State Government, and Huawei, is redefining the future of smallholder farming.

The initiative aims to equip 1,000 rural farmers with mobile-enabled tools and real-time agricultural intelligence. AgriConnect is not only boosting productivity but also addressing the long-standing digital divide that has excluded rural communities from the benefits of modern technology. The programme, unveiled in Abeokuta last week, marks a significant step toward sustainable agriculture and inclusive growth in Nigeria’s agrarian heartland.

Agriculture remains the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, employing over 70% of the population, yet smallholder farmers, often operating in remote areas, face persistent challenges, from unpredictable weather to fluctuating market prices.

AgriConnect tackles these issues head-on by providing farmers with smartphones preloaded with a tailored digital platform. This platform delivers real-time access to weather forecasts, up-to-date market prices, and best practices for crop cultivation. For farmers like Mr. Olude Joshua from Oja-Odan in the Yewa North Local Government Area, this is a game-changer.

I was thrilled when I received an invitation from the state government,” Mr. Joshua shared during the launch event. “I never imagined farmers like me would get smartphones with tools to guide our decisions.”

Equipped with free SIM cards and data, he now has access to digital content designed to optimise farming decisions, from planting schedules to market navigation. For Mr. Joshua, AgriConnect is more than a tool; it is a pathway to greater productivity and economic stability.

Similarly, Mrs. Alimi Kehinde, a cassava and banana farmer from Odogbolu Local Government Area, sees the initiative as a transformative force. Together with her husband, she cultivates over 10 hectares of farmland, supplying major markets in Lagos.

This program will help us understand more about our farming profession,” she said.

For farmers like Mrs. Kehinde, AgriConnect is a chance to refine their craft, improve yields, and compete in an increasingly digital agricultural landscape.

AgriConnect, a multi-stakeholder vision for sustainable agriculture

The power of AgriConnect lies not only in its technology but also in the collaborative vision behind it. The partnership between the MTN Foundation, the Federal Government through the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), the Ogun State Government, and Huawei exemplifies how public-private synergy can drive meaningful change. By combining resources, expertise, and innovation, these stakeholders are addressing systemic barriers to agricultural productivity while fostering digital inclusion.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, speaking at the launch, described AgriConnect as a “catalyst for the cassava value chain,” emphasising its potential to transform Ogun State’s agricultural sector. He also announced plans for a new cotton processing plant, expected to create 250,000 jobs, further underscoring the state’s commitment to economic diversification and job creation through agriculture. “This initiative aligns with our vision to make Ogun State a hub for agricultural innovation,” he said.

Odunayo Sanya, Executive Director of the MTN Foundation, highlighted the broader implications of the program. “Technology is a critical enabler of sustainable agriculture and inclusive growth,” she stated.

She equally noted that the AgriConnect initiative builds on the Foundation’s ₦32 billion investment in national development over the past two decades, reinforcing its commitment to empowering communities through education, health, and economic initiatives.

What sets AgriConnect apart is its focus on bridging the digital divide that has long marginalised rural farmers. In Nigeria, where internet penetration in rural areas lags behind urban centres, access to digital tools can be transformative.

By providing smartphones, free data, and tailored agricultural content, the programme empowers farmers to make data-driven decisions, improve crop yields, and access markets more effectively. This initiative is not just about distributing devices; it is about equipping farmers with the knowledge and connectivity to thrive in a modern economy.

The programme’s emphasis on inclusivity is particularly significant. Smallholder farmers, who often operate on the fringes of technological advancement, are now being brought into the fold of digital innovation. By fostering tech adoption, AgriConnect ensures that rural farmers can compete in an evolving agricultural sector, where precision farming and data analytics are becoming the norm.

The success of AgriConnect in Ogun State holds promise for replication across Nigeria and beyond. By addressing the unique challenges faced by rural farmers, such as limited access to information and markets, the initiative serves as a blueprint for scalable, tech-driven agricultural transformation.

Its multi-stakeholder approach, combining government support, private-sector innovation, and community engagement, offers a model for other African nations seeking to modernise their agricultural sectors.
