M-KOPA, a UK-headquartered fintech company operating across Africa, has revealed that it has now reached 100,000 customers in its South African market. The milestone is a testament to its commitment to digitally and financially include Africans across Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa.

According to a statement by the fintech company, the achievement is greatly attributed to its women’s direct sales network. This is evident as 80% of its 3,000 active agents across the country are women, further revealing M-KOPA’s digital inclusion of women across the African region.

From Gauteng to the Eastern Cape, from Limpopo to the Western Cape, these women are leading our mission to provide digital and financial solutions to everyday earners, especially those in rural areas, by connecting with them on the ground in their communities,” the company said.

Compared to other devices, M-KOPA’s smartphones are not just tools for connectivity; they are financial gateways embedded with the company’s Smart Money Platform, offering affordable credit, health insurance, and device protection.

M-KOPA

In a market it entered in 2023, M-KOPA continues to penetrate South Africa’s underserved communities with affordable smartphone ownership plans and is looking to include women in the global digital landscape.

After its South Africa entry, the company introduced a sales executive initiative through postings on platforms like Glassdoor and Beebee. This move aligns with the company’s commitment to expanding its reach and impact in areas such as Soweto.

The company explained how one of its female direct sales representatives (DSR) is making a significant contribution to smartphone distribution across South Africa.

“Yandiswa Silala, our longest-serving DSR from our first location in Bara, Diepkloof. In 1 year, 6 months, and 29 days, she has served 168 new customers, granting them access to smartphones and helping unlock their journey to additional services, such as financial services, digital loans, and health insurance,” the company explained.

In Soweto, M-KOPA’s aim was to replicate its successful model from Kenya, particularly addressing the challenges posed by frequent power outages due to load-shedding in the region. Despite the challenges, South Africa’s dynamic and diverse economy presents a new opportunity for M-KOPA to make an impact.

The decision to initiate operations in Soweto is strategic, leveraging the community’s resemblance to markets where M-KOPA has previously flourished. The demographics of Soweto, primarily consisting of low to middle-income households, align well with M-KOPA’s product range.

From its first 100,000 customers in South Africa, M-KOPA is strategically positioning itself to offer a pay-as-you-go model for products like solar panels and smartphones, particularly targeting low- to middle-income households.

M-KOPA’s smartphone penetration: a financial lifeline

A significant identity of M-KOPA is the drive to see that every individual in rural communities is not digitally and financially left out due to their living status. To the fintech platform, smartphones are more than a connectivity device but a lifeline to break free from financial exclusion.

By integrating digital financial tools into its smartphone devices, the UK-based startup enables users to build credit histories through affordable daily micropayments, unlocking access to loans, data bundles, and health insurance through partnerships like the one with insurtech firm Turaco.

In this journey, the efforts are finally paying off. A 2024 M-KOPA’s Impact Report revealed that 92% of customers say the company’s financing has made technology more affordable, while 70% credit the platform with helping them achieve financial goals. The company also revealed that 62% of its customers are using their smartphones to generate additional income.

To these, the company has now sold over 1 million branded smartphones in just 12 months since its launch in 2024.

A bedrock of M-KOPA’s success is attributed to its Nairobi-based assembly plant, East Africa Device Assembly Kenya (EADAK), launched in 2023 in partnership with HMD Global. Now Africa’s largest smartphone factory by volume, the facility has produced over 1.5 million devices, including the 1 million M-KOPA-branded phones sold in the past year.

M-KOPA is also in a position to deepen its impact and surpass $500 million in annual revenue by the end of 2025, and has a target to produce 10 million smartphones by 2027.
