Facebook continues to hold the top spot in global digital advertising, according to Sensor Tower’s recent report on the State of Digital Advertising for 2026. This report covers advertising activity from August 2025 to July 2026 and reflects significant growth in the digital ad landscape.
During this year-long period, advertisers poured an estimated $348 billion into digital advertising, marking a 19% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, the total number of digital advertising impressions soared to an astounding 70.7 trillion, a jump of 13%.
What is particularly striking is Facebook’s unwavering dominance in the face of increasing competition from platforms like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and even newer players such as ChatGPT. Despite these alternatives, Facebook remains the go-to channel for advertisers worldwide, as highlighted by Sensor Tower, a company known for tracking consumer behaviour and mobile advertising trends.
In terms of what advertisers are promoting, shopping emerged as the largest category, taking the biggest share of digital ad spending. Following closely behind were ads for Consumer Packaged Goods and Media & Entertainment.

At the individual company level, Procter & Gamble led the pack in advertising spend, followed by heavyweights like Amazon and The Walt Disney Company.

These figures underscore the critical role social media continues to play in advertising strategies. Sensor Tower’s report notes that social platforms command the largest portion of digital marketing budgets, with Facebook consistently leading the charge in the United States as well.
As the advertising landscape evolves, it is clear that social media remains a vital channel for brands looking to connect with consumers. The numbers tell a compelling story of dynamic growth and the persistent appeal of platforms like Facebook in today’s digital age.

Facebook and Instagram: Dominating the dynamic landscape of social media advertising
Instagram continues to play a crucial role in the advertising landscape. Owned by Meta, both Instagram and Facebook have been key players in this space, with companies like Sensor Tower tracking their ad performance separately. This rivalry highlights a significant shift in how brands connect with consumers, especially as advertisers increasingly gravitate toward visual and video-driven content.
The social media advertising market is evolving rapidly and becoming more diverse. Platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Reddit are vying for a share of the advertising budget as brands seek out different audiences and formats to engage with.
According to Sensor Tower’s Q1 2026 report, Reddit emerged as the fastest-growing advertising channel, followed by mobile apps, Instagram, and TikTok. This trend underscores how advertising dollars are flowing across various digital platforms, reflecting a change in how brands strategise their outreach.
Despite this growing competition, Facebook remains firmly at the top of Sensor Tower’s global advertising rankings, indicating that it has not yet lost its crown as the largest digital advertising channel. For advertisers today, simply choosing the platform with the most users isn’t enough. The focus is shifting toward where audiences are most engaged and which formats are capturing their attention.

In this evolving social media race, brands must navigate a complex landscape, learning to adapt their strategies to meet consumers where they are spending their time. The future of advertising will require creativity and adaptability as trends continue to change and new platforms rise to prominence.
