The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) launched a National Identification Number (NIN) data modification portal last year. The portal, introduced to enable a swift and more secure process, allows Nigerians to make corrections to their name, date of birth, and phone numbers on their NIN profile.

Speaking on the NIN data modification platform in March 2024, the Director-General of the Commission, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote said the platform will enable Nigerians to register themselves from the comfort of their homes without the stress of going to the NIMC office or any agent.

We are trying to make sure things are done from the comfort of your own with ease to ensure that we remove the bottlenecks of long queues and also to eliminate extortions. We need to ensure that it’s a seamless process for people to get their NINs,” she noted.

As part of the process, NIMC management also warned Nigerians against modifying their NIN data on unauthorized websites. The commission stated that modifications to NIN data could only be carried out on the official NIMC self-service portal.

“By using the self-service portal, individuals can also enjoy the convenience of updating their information from anywhere, at any time. NIMC therefore advises Nigerians to use only the official portal for all NIN data modification needs and to avoid unauthorized websites to prevent any potential risks,” the commission noted.

It cautioned that attempting to modify NIN data on unauthorized websites could compromise personal information and expose individuals to identity theft while using the official NIMC self-service portal ensures that data remains secure and protected.

What you should know about the NIN Data Modification Self Service

In March 2024, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) made a major update to its system by introducing NIN data modification through the NIMC Self-Service Modification Portal. The development eradicated the need to visit enrolment centres for modification requests and paved the way for a digital system.

The NIN data modifications portal allows for quick and easy data correction such as Change of Name, Phone Number, Date of Birth, and Address requests.

Details that cannot be modified on the portal are Gender, NIN, State of Registration, LGA of Registration, Registration Centre, Ward, Polling Unit, Date of Death, Date of Death Type, and Tracking Number. Others are Date of Registration, Originating Centre, Loading Centre, ID Card Number, Applicant’s Fingerprint (Finger 1 to 10), Applicant’s Fingerprint Reason (Finger 1 to 10) and Applicant’s Signature.

Moreover, the digital shift comes with a couple of advantages such as convenience, transparency, and quick modification.

  • Phone Number Update: Loss or damage of phone number linked to your NIN.

Step-by-Step process for NIN data modification

  1. To begin your NIN data modification process, visit the NIMC Self-Service Portal which is the official platform where all available updates to your NIN can be made.
  2. Once you’re in, log in with your email address and password. Provided you don’t have an account yet, you’ll need to create one by clicking on “Register”. You will provide details such as Last Name (as linked to your NIN), First Name (as linked to your NIN) and Phone Number (this should be the number linked to your NIN). If you are unsure of these details, you can use the NINCard Retrieval Service to retrieve this information.
  3. As part of the validation process, the NIMC portal will capture your facial image to ensure accurate identity verification.
  4. Upon the success of step 3, the portal allows you to update several fields, including such as Name, Address, Phone Number, and Date of Birth. Note that date of birth modification can only be corrected once.
  5. Upload supporting documents of your chosen field. Each modification requires specific supporting documents such as: Name Change: Marriage certificate, affidavit, or court order, Address Change: Utility bill or proof of residency, Phone Number Update: Evidence of the new number linked to your identity, Date of Birth Correction: Birth certificate or affidavit. To avoid unnecessary delays, upload clear copies of these documents.
  6. The next is to make your payment. While change of name, address, and phone number cost N1,522.5 each, date of birth cost N16,340.  Note that the fees may be slightly different when you factor in the payment gateway charges.
  7. After submitting your documents and payment, your application will be processed by NIMC. While the processing time can vary depending on modification, it only takes a few days to a week for approval.
  8. Once your request is approved, you’ll be able to download your updated NIN Slip from the portal.

Once your request is submitted, NIMC will review it. You can also track the status of your NIN data modification request on the portal and once approved, you’ll be able to download your updated NIN slip.
