Airtel Money secures $90m IFC backing ahead of London IPO

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is preparing to invest up to £67.2 million (approximately $90 million) in Airtel Money. This significant financial backing positions Airtel Money as a notable player in the African fintech industry, especially as it gears up for a potential listing on the London Stock Exchange.

As Airtel Money approaches its initial public offering (IPO), this IFC investment is particularly timely. However, it’s essential to understand the nature of this IPO: unlike traditional IPOs, where companies issue new shares to generate funds, the fintech’s offering will focus on existing shares. This means that the company will not be raising new capital; instead, current shareholders will sell part of their stakes to new investors.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) plans to invest up to $90 million in Airtel Money by buying existing shares at a set offer price, though the final agreement is still pending. This investment signifies a growing confidence in Africa’s fintech sector, illustrating the vast potential of this quickly changing market.

Being backed by the IFC means that the fintech will have a significant institutional investor on board before its shares are publicly offered. This could help to generate interest and showcase demand for the shares ahead of the broader market launch.

Airtel Money aims to ensure that at least 10% of its shares are available to the public after its upcoming listing. The company plans to release its prospectus early in October, which will detail the expected price range and the size of the offering.

The planned listing is also a chance for some current shareholders to sell parts of their holdings. Airtel Africa, which holds a substantial 77.85% stake in the fintech, is anticipated to remain a long-term investor even post-listing. Other notable investors include TPG, Mastercard, and the Qatar Investment Authority.

The involvement of the IFC is especially significant, as it is the investment arm of the World Bank Group, with a strong track record of supporting financial services in emerging markets. This partnership not only highlights the credibility of Airtel Money but also spotlights the exciting developments taking place in the African fintech landscape.

Airtel Money is already a major African fintech

The fintech is making a notable impact across 13 African countries by providing essential services like money transfers, payments, and other digital financial solutions through Airtel’s extensive mobile network. As of June 2026, the company boasts around 53 million monthly active users, highlighting its growing presence and popularity in the fintech sector.

In the 12 months leading up to June 2026, Airtel Money processed an impressive $213 billion in transactions. The financials reveal that for the year ending in March 2026, the company generated about $1.35 billion in revenue, with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) reaching $676 million. These figures showcase the significant scale at which Airtel Money operates.

Airtel Money benefits from its close relationship with Airtel Africa, which provides access to a vast customer base and an extensive distribution network. This connection has allowed the fintech company to broaden its digital financial services across the continent, catering to a diverse range of users.

The company is gearing up for a much-anticipated initial public offering (IPO) in London, which is pivotal not just for Airtel Money, but also for the London Stock Exchange. In recent years, the exchange has struggled to attract large technology and growth-focused listings, making Airtel Money’s upcoming IPO a potential game-changer.

The IPO aims to attract international institutional investors, but it also opens doors for eligible retail investors in the UK to purchase shares through various investment platforms and brokers. As the anticipation builds, the exact valuation, offer size, and share price will become clearer with the publication of Airtel Money’s prospectus in October.

In the meantime, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) has already signaled its interest by committing $90 million, indicating strong institutional backing as the fintech prepares for its public debut. As the IPO approaches, the amount of Airtel Money offered to the public and its ultimate valuation will be keenly watched by investors and market analysts alike.
