Dangote Refinery’s ₦2.15tn IPO goes live as Nigerians get a chance to own a piece of Africa’s biggest refinery

Aliko Dangote is offering Nigerians an opportunity to invest in the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, with the signing ceremony for its historic IPO taking place at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.

During Monday’s event, the CEO of Dangote Group shared that the company is offering 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at ₦525 each. Investors can start small, with a minimum subscription of just 10 shares, which amounts to ₦5,250. This initiative has the potential to raise over ₦2 trillion, and the funds will help drive the refinery’s expansion.

Dangote referred to the offering as the “IPO for the people,” emphasising that the accessible minimum subscription is designed to allow everyday Nigerians, workers, drivers, and citizens to own a piece of this significant project. This IPO could enable Nigerians to take direct ownership of one of the largest private industrial endeavours in the country.

Currently, the refinery has a nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, with ambitions to increase that to 1.4 million barrels per day. This growth not only enhances its role in Nigeria’s fuel supply chain but also presents a fantastic opportunity for retail investors to join in the company’s journey.

The subscription period is set to open on September 14 and will close on October 13, marking a significant moment for potential investors across Nigeria.

How Nigerians can buy Dangote Refinery shares

Investors need to be cautious about where they invest in shares, especially when it comes to the Dangote Refinery. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has previously issued warnings to Nigerians about unauthorised requests to purchase shares in the refinery. Investors need to disregard any offers that don’t come through official channels and to always refer to verified offer documents.

Vetiva Advisory Services Limited is the official lead issuing house for the Dangote Refinery share offering. In the coming days, the final prospectus and the approved arrangements for receiving applications will clarify how Nigerians can officially participate in this opportunity.

What this means for potential investors is that they should avoid sending money to unverified agents on WhatsApp, social media, or any investment platforms claiming to provide early access to the shares. Until the authorised channels are confirmed, it’s crucial to be cautious and to wait for the official subscription process to be announced.

To stay informed, investors should keep an eye on announcements from reliable sources such as the SEC, the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), Dangote Refinery itself, and the official issuing and receiving agents.

At a recent signing ceremony, Dangote made it clear: this Initial Public Offering (IPO) is not just about raising a large amount of capital. It’s also about transforming Nigerians from merely being customers of the refinery into active shareholders. This shift aims to create a stronger connection between the business and its local community.
