Egyptian health startup Reme-D raises $1.45M in funding round to acquire new diagnostic tools

Egyptian healthtech company Reme-D has raised $1.45 million in a Pre-Series A funding round. The capital will be used to reinforce the development of diagnostic tools for genetic diseases and cancer, and also expand its production capacity by 10 times.

The funding round was backed by several investors, with Anara Impact Capital leading the round and participation from the Global Innovation Fund, Africa Health Ventures, and others.  The central goal of the investment is to expand Reme-D’s manufacturing capacity, regional footprint, and diagnostic product portfolio.

Founded in 2023 by Salma Tammam, Egyptian-based Reme-D develops and manufactures molecular diagnostic tests for diseases such as tuberculosis (TB), HIV, hepatitis, and HPV, which has become a leading cause of cervical cancer in women. 

At a time when telemedicine is gaining momentum, the startup is focusing on delivering affordable and resilient diagnostics to underserved regions across Africa. Telemedicine is rapidly transforming healthcare across the region by bridging vast geographical divides and overcoming critical doctor shortages.

Reacting to the funding round, Salma Tammam, Founder and CEO of Reme-D, attributed the milestone to the startup’s view that success is ensuring patients in Africa and the Global South are no longer blocked from life-altering disease diagnoses by affordability gaps or the lack of advanced molecular tests in their communities.

The $1.5 million round comes after Reme-D secured a $500,000 investment from the Global Innovation Fund (GIF) in April to scale its molecular diagnostics solutions.

Lead investor Anara Impact Capital acknowledged Reme-D’s ability to combine deep scientific expertise with a clear understanding of the realities of delivering diagnostics in underserved markets. 

“Reme-D has already demonstrated that high-quality molecular diagnostics can be developed and manufactured locally, and we are excited to support the team as they scale their impact across MEA and beyond,” said Mohamed Hussain, Principal at Anara Impact Capital.

Aside from the project to manufacture and acquire new diagnostic tools, the startup wants to add tests for new disease areas, including genetic diseases and cancer-related tests, to its portfolio. The goal is to make more of the temperature-resilient materials easier to transport and store in remote locations with limited infrastructure.

Reme-D’s footprints

In the past three years, Reme-D has developed 30 diagnostic products at its manufacturing facility in Cairo and supplied over 550,000 tests across Egypt, Kenya, and Sudan. 

The startup has expanded its commercialisation and distribution strengths to both public and private laboratories, hospitals, and research institutions, and its products have been used in international scientific publications. In addition, Reme-D has filed a US patent application covering its proprietary infrastructure. 

In a recent development, the company successfully equipped a custom-made solar-powered mobile laboratory commissioned by the World Health Organisation (WHO) Egypt country office, a significant contribution to the Egyptian Ministry of Health’s monitoring of vector-borne diseases in rural areas. 

Reme-D’s team has grown from five in 2023 to 50 people, with preparations to move to a 1500 sqm facility and upgrade its equipment for its tenfold ambition. It also wants to deepen its presence across African markets to reach more remote communities.
