WhatsApp rolls out browser calling, waiting rooms and other call features

WhatsApp has introduced several new calling features, including browser-based voice and video calls, call transfers between devices, waiting rooms for group calls, and background noise suppression, as it expands its communication tools.

The updates are part of the app’s broader effort to improve its calling experience and make communication across devices more seamless for users. The features were highlighted by Kunal Shah, WhatsApp’s global head, who shared details of the new additions on Tuesday.

One of the major updates is the introduction of browser calling, which allows users to make and receive WhatsApp voice and video calls directly from their web browsers.

Previously, WhatsApp Web allowed users to send messages, share files, and access conversations from their computers, but calling capabilities were limited compared with the mobile application.

With the latest update, users can now join calls directly from their browsers, providing greater flexibility when switching between devices. This feature is especially beneficial for those who primarily work on computers and wish to avoid the hassle of constantly switching between their phones and desktops.

The move also places WhatsApp closer to platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams, which have built their services around browser-based communication.

Other new WhatsApp features

The app has also launched a call transfer feature that lets users move an ongoing group call from one device to another without disconnecting.

The feature allows users to maintain conversations seamlessly, even if they need to switch devices during a call. For example, a person can transition from a smartphone to a computer without having to leave the call or start a new session. This enhances flexibility for users who depend on WhatsApp for both personal and professional communication.

The messaging platform is also introducing a Waiting Room feature for group calls. This feature allows hosts to have more control by approving participants before they can join the group conversation. This could help prevent unwanted participants from accessing private calls.

Additionally, it has introduced background noise suppression to enhance audio quality during calls. This feature minimises surrounding sounds, enabling users to have clearer conversations in noisy or crowded environments.

The latest updates come as WhatsApp continues to expand beyond being just a messaging platform by adding more features around communication, productivity, and business use.
