I Might Have Found My New Favourite Android: Infinix Hot 70 Pro 5G Review

Every phone gets about ten minutes before you know how you feel about it. The Infinix Hot 70 Pro 5G may have used three of those. A tiny pixel display is hiding inside the camera module, and its beautiful design will do that to you.

For the display, nobody tells you it is there. You pick up the phone, flip it over to look at the cameras, and notice the bottom square doing something. That is the beginning of what is a pretty eventful relationship with a device.

The Infinix Hot 70 Pro 5G has a 144Hz FHD+ display, a Sony IMX882 main sensor, a 6000mAh battery with an architecture designed to last six years without significant degradation, 5G via the MediaTek Dimensity 7100, and an AI feature set that is genuinely thought through. It also looks excellent in almost any colourway you pick. For what it costs, that is a lot going on.

The Thermo Orange and What I Actually Think of It

I got the Thermo Orange variant, which has thermochromic ink on the back. The idea is that the colour responds to temperature. Put it somewhere cold for 10-15 mins and apply heat in a specific spot for 5 secs, and the colour shifts visibly.

The thermochromic ink responds to temperature, and the Thermo Orange is worth trying out yourself when you get it. The phone is IP68 rated, which means it is waterproof, so you are safe when you test it within the recommended timeline.

What I can say for certain is that it looks excellent regardless. It is a warm, deep colour with a finish Infinix calls Baby-Smooth, and after a week of heavy use I have not seen a single fingerprint on it.

The other colourways are all doing something interesting too. The Silk Glow Purple shifts colour based on the angle of light, inspired by how feathers catch it. The Mirage Green changes character between daylight and night. Infinix has clearly been having fun with the design team on this one, and it shows.

At 7.95mm and 204 grams, the phone is slimmer and lighter than I expected from the spec sheet. It sits well in hand.

The Active Matrix Display: Infinix Keeps Finding New Uses for This Thing

Infinix has been putting a small pixel display, called the Active Matrix display, in their phones for a few releases across the Hot and Note ranges now. But what I appreciate the most is that each time it shows up, it lands somewhere new and creative. On the Infinix Hot 70 Pro 5G, they have put it inside one of the camera housings, which is a very confident design decision.

I want to be clear about what that means practically. When someone calls me, the cube lights up and shows call notifications before I even flip the phone over. When I plug in to charge, it animates. When the battery is low, it tells me. There is a selfie timer countdown that plays on the camera housing itself.

You can create custom pixel art for it and share the design with another Infinix phone via NFC. There are two mini-games built into it: roulette and a number game, playable directly on the little display in the camera.

I showed this to someone, and they went quiet for a moment before they reacted. That is always the sign of something genuinely different.

The AI Features Are the Real Story Here

AI on most phones means a filter and a text suggestion. On the Infinix Hot 70 Pro 5G, it means a side orange button you will actually press every day because it is genuinely thought through in a way that goes beyond what I expected.

FlashMemo and MindHub

Single press of the AI button: FlashMemo activates.

Here is the situation FlashMemo fixes. I am reading something interesting, and I do not have time to finish it. My usual options: bookmark it and never open bookmarks again, screenshot it and lose it in a gallery, copy the link and paste it somewhere and then forget which app I pasted it in. I have done all three. None of it works.

With FlashMemo, one tap captures whatever is on my screen and automatically generates a title, a summary, and searchable tags. Everything goes into MindHub, a searchable knowledge base on the phone. Three weeks later, I can find that thing I saved in seconds.

I have been using this more than any other feature on the phone. It is one of those things where once you have it, you cannot believe you were doing it the old way.

Folax AI and the One-Tap Button

Long-press on that same orange button, and Folax opens. Writing assistance, translation, photo processing, general queries. I like that Infinix gave this its own dedicated button rather than burying it three menus deep. It changes how often you actually reach for it.

The phone also comes with the AI Class Timetable, where you photograph your class schedule, printed or handwritten, and the phone converts it into a structured digital calendar. Flash Calls 2.0 allows Incoming calls to now come with an animated screen where the caller can attach a message preview. You see what they want before you decide to pick up. And lastly, the camera app has AI Eraser, AI Extender, AI Cartoon, AI Doodle, and Vogue Portraits all accessible without hunting through settings.

The Camera: The Sony Sensor Is Doing Real Work

The main sensor is a Sony IMX882, 50MP, f/1.79 aperture. Sony puts larger sensor surfaces into this chip than you typically see at this price, which translates to more light and better results when conditions are not ideal.

I noticed this most in the evening. Shots came back clean and detailed in conditions where I expected the camera to struggle. The colours came out accurate, the way things actually looked.

Video goes up to 2K at 30fps and 1080P at 60fps. The 2x lossless zoom holds up. Live Photo mode captures the moment around each shot and keeps the best frames, which makes the gallery feel more alive than a standard static camera roll.

The 8MP front camera produces natural, clean selfies. The processing is flattering without feeling edited, which is the right balance.

Performance: Fast, and Stays Fast

The MediaTek Dimensity 7100 5G scores around 788,000 on AnTuTu. In daily use, that means apps open immediately, switching between them is seamless, and gaming at comfortable settings runs without drama. The 144Hz display at FHD+ with a 240Hz touch sampling rate makes everything feel responsive in a way you notice.

After a week on the 144Hz display, everything on screen just feels right. The scrolling, the UI transitions, the way the phone responds when you tap it. It is one of those things that is hard to describe and easy to feel.

Pair this with the 256GB of storage and 8gb internal RAM (with an additional 8GB of virtual RAM), and you have a device that genuinely feels good.

Infinix has also committed to five years of software updates and three OS upgrades for this device, which is a longer support window than most phones in this range offer.

Battery Life: I Stopped Worrying About It

The 6000mAh battery got me through every full day I used this phone without once reaching for a charger before I was ready. The 45W charger takes it from zero to 50 per cent in 25 minutes, which means a quick plug-in before leaving home is a real solution if you forget overnight.

The battery has a self-healing architecture designed to maintain over 80% health after six years of daily use. Most phone batteries start noticeably degrading around the two-year mark. The engineering here is aimed at tripling that lifespan, and Infinix is specific enough about the mechanism that it reads as a genuine claim rather than a marketing line.

There is also reverse wireless charging and Bypass Charging for gaming sessions where the power goes directly to the device and skips the battery entirely, reducing heat and protecting long-term battery health.

The Other Things That Stuck With Me

• UltraLink: Peer-to-peer calls and texts up to 1.5km with no network signal. For anyone who has been somewhere with no coverage and needed to reach someone, this is not a gimmick.

• NFC Transfer to iPhone: File transfer from this phone to an iPhone via NFC. Cross-platform and seamless.
• IR Remote: Controls TVs, air conditioning units, and other IR appliances. Once you have this, you miss it immediately on phones that do not.

Infinix Hot 70 Pro 5G: So, New Favourite?

I came into this review with normal expectations for a mid-range phone. I am leaving it, thinking about the Infinix Hot 70 Pro 5G differently.

The AI features are the headline for me. FlashMemo and MindHub changed how I interact with content on my phone during the review period. 

The Sony IMX882 camera over-delivers at this price. The battery is engineered with a six-year lifespan in mind. The Active Matrix Cube is the kind of detail that reminds you someone at Infinix was genuinely enjoying themselves when they designed this phone. And the 144Hz Dimensity 7100 combination keeps up with everything I throw at it.

At the starting price of N399,000, the Infinix Hot 70 Pro 5G earns a serious recommendation. It kept surprising me, which is not something I say lightly.
