FG opens credit scheme to help Nigerians buy laptops, smartphones on instalment

The Federal Government has opened applications for a consumer credit scheme that allows Nigerians to buy smartphones, laptops, and tablets through flexible instalment payments instead of paying the full cost upfront.

The programme, called Credit for Laptops, Internet, Connectivity and Knowledge Digital Devices, shortened to C.L.I.C.K.D., was unveiled in Abuja on Tuesday by Communications Minister Bosun Tijani alongside Uzoma Nwagba, Managing Director and CEO of the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation, known as CREDICORP, which is implementing the initiative in partnership with the ministry.

The idea is straightforward. A fresh graduate trying to land a remote job cannot afford a ₦400,000 laptop. A 3MTT fellow who just completed a tech training programme needs a device to start freelancing, but does not have the cash. C.L.I.C.K.D. is designed for exactly those people, letting them take the device now and pay back over time in manageable instalments.

The programme will initially focus on locally assembled laptops, which is also part of a broader push to encourage local manufacturing in Nigeria’s tech hardware space.

The pilot phase has started with 1,000 laptops for fellows of the Federal Government’s Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Programme. Seventy-seven beneficiaries in Abuja have already received devices, with the rest to be distributed across other states in phases. CREDICORP has not yet announced the interest rate, repayment period, or any required down payment. Those details are expected to follow as the programme scales beyond the pilot.

How to apply for the credit scheme and who can access it

Applications are open through the official portal at credicorp.ng/clickd. The process is fully online and takes a few minutes to complete. Here is how it works step by step.

Visit credicorp.ng/clickd and click on “I’m Interested” to access the application form. You will be asked to provide your state of residence, your employment status, whether you are a salary earner, freelancer, business owner, student, job seeker, or NYSC member, and optionally your monthly income.

You will also need to indicate whether you belong to any digital talent programme and specify the device you need and what you intend to use it for, whether learning, remote work, freelancing, software development, content creation, or business use.

Before submitting, applicants must confirm that the information provided is accurate, consent to being contacted about their application, and authorise CREDICORP and its partners to assess their eligibility.

On who qualifies right now: the current pilot is publicly confirmed for 3MTT fellows only. However, the application form also lists participants from Andela Learning Community, Learn2Earn, ALX Africa, HNG Internship, AltSchool Africa, and Genesys Tech Hub as options, suggesting those groups may also be able to apply, though CREDICORP has not yet made a formal announcement about their inclusion in the current phase.

If you are in any of those programmes or are a 3MTT fellow, it is worth submitting an expression of interest now. The portal is live and accepting applications.
