Toyota has launched its fully electric SUV in Kenya, Business Today reports. The launch was carried out by CFAO Motors, Toyota’s distributors in the East African country. Called the Toyota bZ4X, the launch and subsequent unveiling mark the global automotive brand’s official entry into Kenya’s growing electric vehicle market as demand for cleaner transportation continues to rise.

With this, the Toyota bZ4X becomes the first fully electric Toyota SUV available in the country. This development comes at a time of increased interest in electric mobility, driven by rising fuel costs, environmental concerns and expanding charging infrastructure.

Speaking during the launch, CFAO Mobility Kenya Managing Director Arvinder Reel said the new electric model represents the future of mobility and reflects the company’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions through cleaner technologies.

The bZ4X represents the next chapter in mobility. With its zero-emissions, impressive range and standard-setting safety features, this innovative SUV ensures our customers don’t have to choose between cutting-edge electric performance and trusted, durable engineering,” Arvinder Reel said.

She further noted that the Toyota bZ4X is part of the company’s global “Beyond Zero” strategy. The strategy focuses on developing low-emission and zero-emission vehicles while maintaining the reliability and durability the brand is known for.

Meet the Toyota bZ4X

The fully electric Toyota bZ4X SUV is powered by a 73.1 kWh lithium-ion battery. A single charge delivers up to 516 kilometres of driving range, depending on the quality of roads and driving conditions. The vehicle produces 215 horsepower and 337 Newton-metre (Nm) of torque, which enables it to accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in just over five seconds.

The SUV also employs a single-speed eAxle transmission designed to provide smooth and quiet performance. Charging has been designed to fit everyday use, and the vehicle uses a 150 kW DC fast charger, which means the battery can be charged from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in 30 minutes. The vehicle comes with an eight-year or 120,000 kilometre battery warranty. This, Toyota believes, will address concerns many buyers may have about battery life and replacement costs.

The Toyota bZ4X is built on the company’s dedicated e-TNGA electric vehicle platform. Thus, the battery is placed beneath the floor, lowering the vehicle’s centre of gravity, improving handling and creating more cabin space for passengers.

The Toyota bZ4X is suitable for both city driving and rougher roads common across many parts of Kenya, with a ground clearance of 213 millimetres. It has a length of 4.69 metres and rests on 20-inch alloy wheels. It also has a 500 mm wading depth, Multi-Terrain Select, X-Mode and Downhill Assist Control, features aimed at giving drivers confidence on challenging surfaces.

Inside, the SUV features a spacious cabin with synthetic leather seats, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof and a 12.3-inch infotainment display. The vehicle also comes with Toyota Safety Sense, a package that includes pre-collision warning systems, lane assistance technology, multiple airbags and electronic stability control.

The launch of the bZ4X highlights how Kenya’s automotive industry is gradually embracing electric mobility. While electric motorcycles and three-wheelers currently account for the majority of EV adoption, passenger electric vehicles are becoming increasingly visible in major urban centres such as Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.
