The chain of recent breakthroughs in the automobile space: the drop in battery costs and the first-mover competition between automakers have yielded revolutionary products for years, the most recent of such is the manufacturing of Electric Vehicles. And, Tesla with its Model 3 is leading the fray.

Tesla, ahead of many other competing manufacturers, has just launched the fastest Electric Vehicle (EV), the brand new Tesla Model 3. Model 3 has got, in a real sense, a combination of real world range, performance, safety, spaciousness and comfort all packed into one.

Cost is the koko?

The Tesla’s new product is the company’s most affordable car yet. Model 3 can achieve 220 miles of range per charge while the starting price is at only $35,000 (minus incentives). Model 3 is designed to attain the highest safety ratings in every category.

I got an apt chart from Bloomberg that compares the Tesla Model 3 with BMW 320i Sedan and the Mercedes-Benz C300. These are similar models by other major manufacturers that have been mentioned by analysts as good options. See for yourself:

“This is a great day for Tesla…It was never our goal just to make expensive cars. We wanted to make cars everyone could buy,” — That was Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk’s verdict at the unveiling on Friday. The big question is: is the Tesla Model 3 truly affordable? 

According to the Musk, with the Model 3, Tesla is releasing a vehicle that could truly move the needle on electric car adoption as it more affordable compared to Tesla’s first three vehicles – the Roadster, Model S and Model X.

CNN reports that this weekend marked a long awaited journey of delivering affordable electric cars to consumers in the market. Tesla, at the automaker’s manufacturing plant in Fremont, California, handed over the keys to the first 30 Model 3 buyers as reported by the media.

With this, I totally agree.

Feel the machine!

Let me give you a taste of the Tesla Model 3.

First, consider the security.  The car does not have a key or a key fob. Instead, it syncs to your phone through a Bluetooth connection and will automatically unlock as you approach. And, in case your phone dies, it has a portable key card that you can keep in your wallet. You can unlock it by swiping it across the car’s B pillar.

It has one central dashboard screen. It can effortlessly jump from zero to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds.  It comes with an eight years battery warranty and 100,000 miles. A battery range of 220 miles per charge is guaranteed. (see more specs here)

Model 3 was designed to be simple so that Tesla can produce more cars faster. Model 3 still has the sleek finishing of Tesla’s touch.

It is however interesting to note that a customer pre-ordering a Tesla Model 3 today would have to wait for 12 to 18 months to receive the Tesla Model 3 order. That is perhaps stretching our patience too long and some of us cannot wait.
