The latest Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 pro has promised rivalry with latest Samsung and Apple smartphones both in technology and in pricing. Huawei got on board with the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro with the skinny-bezel trend of 2017, 5.9-inch and 6-inch edge-to-edge displays respectively, as well as fast-charging batteries that can power up to 2 days heavy phone usage.

The slimness and sleekness of the Mate 10s can almost make you forget how wide the phone is. With the sharper 16:9 screen, video streaming just got more fun, especially on YouTube and Netflix.

While the Mate 10 is 8.2mm thick and has a fingerprint sensor below the screen, the thickness of the Pro is only 7.9mm and has its fingerprint sensor around the back. Where the Mate 10 gets a headphone jack and a microSD card slot, the Pro features IP67 waterproofing and an IR blaster instead.

However different, the Mate 10s definitely have a lot in common; dual cameras with f/1.6 lenses that includes a 20-megapixel colour sensor and a secondary 12-megapixel monochrome sensor designed for better imaging quality, a Kirin 970 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 4,000mAh battery, 64GB of storage.

Another variation, however, is that the Pro has an additional option with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while the Porsche Design model comes with 6GB of RAM and ups the storage to 256GB and a sleek diamond black colour which set it apart from the Mate 10 Pro.

According to the Verge, the biggest differentiator for Huawei this year is the Kirin 970 chip, developed in-house at the company’s HiSilicon semiconductor arm. The Kirin 970 includes what Huawei is calling an NPU, or neural processing unit, which is designed to handle tasks related to AI and deep learning. Apple announced much the same with the iPhone 8 and X’s A11 Bionic chip, which includes a “neural engine,” but Huawei is leaning harder into making the Kirin 970’s NPU a core feature of the device.

With availability slated for late October, the Mate 10 is priced at €699 while the Mate 10 Pro is priced at €799 with availability in mid-November. However, the Porsche Design model with the same availability is €1,395 premium price– the release date is yet to be announced with no word on US availability.

I would say the design of the Mate 10s is great and the features superb but will the quality of this device make it come to par with the latest Apple and Samsung technologies?
