#CodeLagos Gets New Coding Centres in Schools, in Partnership with 9mobile


In a bid to make coding education framework accessible to every student in the State, the Lagos State Government has launched two Coding Centres set up by 9mobile for CodeLagos, yesterday.

The event which took place at Rabiatu Thompson Memorial Primary School, Surulere, was superintended over by Mrs Ronke Soyombo, Director General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, who represented Mr Obafela Bank-Olemoh, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education.


According to Mrs Soyombo, CodeLagos is poised to position Lagos State as the technology frontier in Africa aligning with the Lagos Smart City Initiative of the Akinwunmi Ambode administration in Partnership with Dubai Smart City. She noted that the state’s administration is committed to imparting quality all-around digital education that will enhance maximum self-discovery & development for all Lagosians.

“These pieces of training are provided by the state in collaboration with private sector partners within the technology sector to foster necessary skills to create sustainable solutions to social challenges and create employment opportunities”, she said.


On her part, Mrs Oluseyi Osunsedo, Acting Director, Regulatory and Corporate Affairs, 9mobile speaks of the motivation of the network in the project. “We believe that in the future, some of the students of Rabiatu Thompson Memorial Primary School Surulere would be ICT gurus”, she said.


CodeLagos is an initiative of the Lagos State Ministry of Education aimed at teaching young people how to write code and creatively solve problems. It was unveiled in November 2016 with the aim of teaching one million Lagosians how to code before 2019 so as to make Lagos the technology frontier for Africa.

The pilot phase of the training enabled the state to equip about 5,464 primary and secondary school students in the State with “critical life skills” which included basic computing, computational thinking, and use of basic computer programming tools like Scratch and Python.

The CodeLagos program is totally free for participants.
