The KAYAK app is on our radar this week considering a lot of us would be moving around to celebrate Eid al-Adha, and because we love to tell you if these apps meet the requirement for long-term continuous use as promoted by ‘hype factors’.
Besides, it’s still July, a month we picked to review travel and vacation apps that promise ease and memories.
To review the KAYAK app, we will be looking at the user interface, how it works, what the app offers, pricing, what users are saying and our observations.
About KAYAK App
KAYAK – not like the small watercraft, an online travel and related services company this time – launched in 2004 and founded by Steve Hefner, Paul English and Terrell Jones, is a travel planning app that offers users the best deals for flights, hotels, cars and several other travel necessities.
KAYAK helps millions of travellers around the globe make confident travel decisions. As one of the world’s leading travel search engines, KAYAK searches other sites to show travellers the information they need to find the right flights, hotels, rental cars and vacation packages. KAYAK offers a variety of tools and features such as KAYAK Trips, explore, and price forecast.

The review:
App design & ease of use
The user interface of the KAYAK app is enticing, as it features an orange and green colour scheme.
The fonts are bold and clear but not stylish. And, the images that depict the different locations are crystal – clear enough to understand what you are looking at.
Most of the products available on the app are clearly and neatly arranged on the home page, and once you launch the app you can see the flight icon, the bed icon, the car icon and the umbrella icon, right at the top of the page.
The offerings
With KAYAK, users can search for hotels, flights, and car rentals with ease.
By entering a few details into a search bar, it will find you accommodations, including competing prices, so you can decide based on your budget or taste.

Find a flight, car, hotel holiday
Users can find the cheapest flights available to any destination of their choice – the best prices for hotels, car hire, and you can find a holiday location if you are yet to decide where you would like to go.
For example, if you search for a hotel in Marrakesh, Morocco, the app gives you options available in Marrakesh based on the recommended, cheapest, closest, deals, review score and star rating.
Recommendations and explore
This feature recommends the best places to visit at every given time (season) of the year.
The app also shows users popular destinations that other travellers from your country or region are visiting in that season and gives additional details on if they are open to tourists and even COVID-19 requirements for travellers.
If you are in Lagos for example, KAYAK recommends other cities in Nigeria for you to explore. It then goes to other West African countries like Ghana, and Liberia, and keeps on expanding the search results.
Trips
This feature helps you ‘travel like an expert’ as you have access to information like gate change alerts, real-time check-in, flight status and other important information.
This also doubles as a trip planner as it helps users arrange all the details of their plans, regardless of where they booked in one place. Users of the KAYAK app can also share and collaborate with friends, loved ones or even colleagues for a work trip.
Also, users’ itineraries can be accessed anytime, anywhere, even without an internet connection.
Price alerts
As a user, you can create price alerts and you will get a notification from the app when the price drops.
This feature helps users stay updated on offers from airlines, hotels or even favourite tourist locations.
Tools
The KAYAK app has a flight tracker feature which helps travellers track their flights.
Besides this is a bag tool – an AR measuring tool which lets you know if your carry-on bag complies with the policy of the airline you’re flying with.
Pricing
All the products, features and tools available on the KAYAK app are free.
What users are saying
Anonymous: This app exceeds my expectations. I’m a first-time traveller and KAYAK has helped me stay organised, keep me up to date and everything in one place. A lot less stress on my part. Instead of trying to remember what app I used for what reservation and having to search through troves of emails, I can just go to KAYAK and with a few clicks, I have every important piece of information. Absolutely love it and recommend it. Especially for first-time travellers who have no experience in this area.
Christian Magallon: I used this app a lot. I travel frequently and recently the prices seemed too high. I checked the same flight on other people’s phones and the same flight would be significantly lower. Kind of feel like they are ripping me off since I would use them often and didn’t compare prices
Anonymous: Straight forward information. Love it!
Conclusion
KAYAK says it has 63 supported markets including South Africa, 29 languages, 48 language variants, and 26 international offices, so has a large covering good enough for tourists who want to see the part – or part of it.
On another note, the KAYAK app gives users opportunities to stay organised and create memories from the beginning of the trip up until the end, so we would recommend it.
Thank us later!
