UAE lifts visa ban on Nigerian travellers following President Tinubu's visit

President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have inked a groundbreaking agreement in Abu Dhabi to end the visa ban that was in place for Nigerian travellers. This will also herald a new era in relations between the two nations.

Under the terms of the agreement, both Etihad Airlines and Emirates Airlines will immediately recommence flight operations to and from Nigeria, without any delay. Notably, this revival of air travel connectivity between the two countries comes with no immediate financial obligation imposed on the Nigerian government.

One of the cornerstones of this agreement is the Nigerian president’s economic development proposals. These proposals have paved the way for significant investments, amounting to several billions of U.S. dollars, to flow into Nigeria’s economy. These investments will span various sectors, including defence, agriculture, and more. Additionally, the investment arms of the Emirati government will play a crucial role in these ventures.

Moving forward, President Tinubu and President Al Nahyan have successfully negotiated a joint foreign exchange liquidity program, the details of which will be revealed in the upcoming weeks. This program is expected to further bolster economic ties between Nigeria and UAE.

The President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu expressed his appreciation for President Al Nahyan’s unwavering friendship and commitment to resetting and elevating the relations between Nigeria and the UAE to a new level of excellence, as the historic agreement between the two nations promises a brighter future for its citizens.

The visa ban on Nigerians travelling to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was initially imposed due to concerns over security and immigration-related issues. In March 2019, the UAE announced a suspension of the issuance of visas to Nigerian citizens, citing reasons such as the detection of fraudulent travel documents and increased security risks. These concerns were associated with illegal activities, including human trafficking and using fake documents for travel purposes.

It is important to note that travel bans can be implemented by countries to address various issues, including security, immigration, and diplomatic matters. In the case of the UAE, the ban on Nigerian travellers was a response to perceived security and immigration challenges, which were eventually addressed through diplomatic negotiations and agreements, leading to the lifting of the ban.
