One crucial component in embarking on the tertiary institution admission process in Nigeria is getting familiar with JAMB CAPS (Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s Central Admissions Processing System).

For candidates seeking admission into universities, polytechnics or colleges of education nationwide, JAMB CAPS serves as a bridge and a process from having a UTME score to applying to an institution of choice, taking post-UTME or screening and finally getting admitted.

For every Jambite or prospective candidate, understanding how this system works is essential to navigating the admission process as outlined by the examination board.

This article provides a complete guide to understanding why JAMB CAPS was introduced, how it works, its features and candidates’ role within the portal.

What you should know about JAMB CAPS

JAMB CAPS, which stands for Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board Central Admissions Processing System, is an online platform developed by the examination board to streamline and manage the admission process into tertiary institutions. The system allows candidates to check their admission status, accept or reject offers, and manage their admission information in one place.

Introduced during the 2017/2018 session, with full implementation in the 2018/2019 admission exercise, JAMB CAPS was introduced to automate the admission process, empower candidates with information on choice of institutions and choice of course, eliminate multiple admissions, ensure fair selection and restore tertiary institutions’ autonomy with respect to admission management.

Simply put, the JAMB CAPS is a marketplace where the board, tertiary institutions, and candidates meet to coordinate, monitor and regulate the admission process.

  • Candidates: Track admission status and accept/reject offers.
  • Institutions: Recommend candidates and monitor the admission process.
  • JAMB: Oversee the entire process to ensure fairness and transparency.

  • Profile Page: Candidates can check their biodata to verify their details.
  • Admission Status Monitoring: Candidates can check whether they have been offered admission and respond accordingly.
  • Acceptance or Rejection of Admission Offers: The platform allows candidates to accept or reject admission offers, providing control over their educational choices.
  • Course Transfer Approval: In cases where institutions offer a different course than initially applied for, candidates can accept or reject the proposed course transfer through JAMB CAPS.

How JAMB CAPS works with the admission process

While the portal works as a coordinating system, there are processes involved between JAMB and tertiary institutions towards candidates’ accessibility on JAMB CAPS.

  • Following the release of UTME results, JAMB sends each candidate’s information and result to their respective institution of choice. With this, JAMB expects all institutions to set their cut-off marks/POST UTME cut-off mark (in line with the minimum cut-off mark).
  • After the cut-off mark has been set and sent back to the board for verification, JAMB confirms the admission criteria for all the various institutions in terms of post-UTME screening or any other screening exercise, paving the way for JAMB CAPS accessibility.
  • Tertiary institutions download candidates’ results and records from JAMB. They verify those who meet their cut-off mark and then provide them access to apply for the post-UTME screening.
  • Candidates are expected to upload their O’Level results to their profile via the JAMB CAPS for verification by their respective institution of choice.
  • Following the post-UTME screening, candidates are expected to track their admission status on JAMB CAPS. The admission status will be displayed by showing ‘Admitted’, ‘Not Admitted’, or ‘Admission in Progress.
  • Through the JAMB CAPS, candidates will be required to either ‘Accept Admission’ or ‘Reject Admission.’

If a candidate accepts the admission, his name will be submitted to the institution, and he will be required to print the admission letter.

Provided a candidate chooses to reject the admission, he will be open to the JAMB CAPS marketplace and become open to being granted admission by other institutions that are still sorting out for students. These institutions are usually private tertiary institutions or colleges of education. They select candidates based on UTME score, choice of programme, and the State or Local Government Area.
