OpenAI has rolled out GPT-5, its latest ChatGPT model, designed to deliver unified, state-of-the-art performance across coding, math, writing, health, visual perception, and more. The rollout is the company’s latest attempt to edge rivals in the global race for AI resources.

While unveiling the model on Thursday, the company highlighted that GPT‑5 is a unified system enabled with an advanced version. This advanced version enables it to answer prompts with a deeper reasoning model for hard questions and is more capable of coding.

In addition, OpenAI said that GPT-5 thinking comes with “a real‑time router that quickly decides which to use based on conversation type, complexity, tool needs, and your explicit intent (for example, if you say ‘think hard about this’ in the prompt).”

A significant feature of GPT-5, according to the company, is its ability to answer real-world queries. This makes the model outperform previous models on benchmarks and answers questions more quickly.

We’ve made significant advances in reducing hallucinations, improving instruction following, and minimising sycophancy, while levelling up GPT‑5’s performance in three of ChatGPT’s most common uses: writing, coding, and health,” Open AI said.

After yesterday’s live-streamed event, GPT-5 has been made available to all users. OpenAI said Pro, Plus, and Team users can gain access to coding with GPT‑5 in the Codex CLI by signing in with ChatGPT. The model has also been made default in ChatGPT, replacing GPT‑4o, OpenAI o3, OpenAI o4-mini, GPT‑4.1, and GPT‑4.5 for signed-in users.

Similar to the previous models, the difference between free and paid access to GPT‑5 is usage volume. The company said Pro subscribers get unlimited access to GPT‑5 and access to GPT‑5 Pro. Users can also use it comfortably as their default model for everyday questions, with significantly higher usage than free users.

However, ChatGPT free-tier users might not access the full reasoning capabilities of the model for now. OpenAI explained that once free users reach their GPT‑5 usage limits, they will transition to GPT‑5 mini.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT advancements

OpenAI’s ChatGPT journey started in 2022 with the release of GPT-3.5. This came at a time when open-source models and chatbots were gaining momentum globally. Since that first step, the company has rolled out a couple of advancements, including multiple options that mimic the process of human reasoning and AI agents that are meant to perform tasks on a user’s behalf with little to no intervention.

At the time when the company rolled out GPT-4, Sam Altman hinted at the ongoing work of its GPT-5. In April, he said GPT-5 would be “much better” than the company originally expected and also expressed some personal apprehension at the new model’s capabilities.

“I got emailed a question that I didn’t quite understand, and I put it in the model, this is GPT-5, and it answered it perfectly,” Altman said.

According to Nick Turley, who runs OpenAI’s ChatGPT team, the new model is quicker to respond to users, better at answering queries and also makes things up less often than previous models.

When you’re talking to this thing, it feels just a little bit more natural,” Turley said.

Significantly, OpenAI is positioning the new model as particularly helpful for computer programming. To test out its coding mechanisms, OpenAI engaged a number of companies as early testers, including Anysphere, maker of the popular AI coding assistant Cursor, and Lovable, a Swedish vibe coding startup.

As the United States-based company is frequently raising the bar as the frontrunner in the AI market, it faces tight competition from Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Anthropic and Elon Musk’s xAI, which recently released Grok 4. Meta Platforms Inc. is also spending heavily to hire top talent for a new AI lab, including approaching more than a dozen employees from OpenAI.

In its own advancements, OpenAI is also in early talks about a potential sale of stock for current and former employees at a valuation of about $500 billion. And last week, the company said it now has nearly 700 million ChatGPT users each week and 5 million paying business users.
