Another beautiful week has ended and we hope it was exciting for you. As you rest from the week’s hustle, we bring you a quick summary of the events that happened during the week. Ranging from the First female president of Ethiopia to RCCG planning to hold Hackathon in November, Wizkid Fever video with Tiwa Savage setting social media on fire and many more.

Ethiopia Gets First Female President.

Ethiopian members of parliament have selected Sahle-Work Zewde as the country’s first female President.

Ms Sahle-Work is an experienced diplomat who has now become Africa’s only female head of state. Her election to the ceremonial position comes a week after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed a cabinet with half the posts taken up by women.

After being sworn in, President Sahle-Work promised to work hard to make gender equality a reality in Ethiopia. She said, “the ongoing reform process, which embraces equal representation of women as well as people from different ethnic groups, will lead them to realise a prosperous, developed and united Ethiopia in the near future.”

President Sahle-Work also spoke about the importance of maintaining  peace in the East African country.

Ms Sahle-Work’s appointment has been welcomed by Ethiopians on social media with many calling it “historic”.

A very big congratulations to the first Female President of Ethiopia.

Google Partners Pluralsight and Andela to Train 10,000 African Developers in Android and Mobile Web Development

During the week, search engine giant, Google, announced a new partnership with Pluralsight and Andela to train 10,000 African developers. The project called ‘Google Developer Scholarship’ is aimed at training the developers in Android and mobile web development. The 4-month scholarship which is part of a larger Google  project already looks like and amazing endeavour.

Google’s choice to partner with Pluralsight is quite apt. Pluralsight is a leading online platform for technology and developer training. It has a range of trendy and important courses that developers and companies use to keep pace with changing tech development.

According to Google, “the aim of this program is to provide a continuous engagement platform to developers in Africa on a track to become professional developers.”

We know Nigerian developers cannot wait to grab this opportunity once it comes.

Google Launches Motorbike Mode for Google Maps

A lot of people will agree with me that Google Map has been a valuable friend, not just for drivers and motorists but also for every kind of mobile user.

During the course of the week, Google launched  new set of features that allow motocycle riders to take advantage of the app, on the Google map.

Google is gradually making the feature available to more countries including its first incursion into Africa. During the week, the search engine company launched Motorbike Mode in Kenya.

Since it has landed in Africa, Nigerian okada riders should get ready for the change that’s coming.

Instagram, Twitter at Fever Pitch as Wizkid Features Tiwa Savage in ‘Fever’ Video

Wizkid totally blew open social media with the new video of his song, Fever, which featured Tiwa Savage as video vixen. The excitement on social media hasn’t reached such a fever pitch for a while as the  sultry video trended and is still trending. Everyone on social media was talking about it, some on a good note, others on not so good notes, and others yet trolling the duo, especially Tiwa Savage, like mad.

RCCG Announces First Ever Hackathon to Hold in November

It is really heartwarming to know that religious groups are now recognizing tech as solutions to problems even in the house of God. This week, RCCG announced its plans to hold its first  HACKATHON which might as well be the first of its kind from any religious body in the country.

Tagged “Kingdom Hack,“ the event is organised by the Youth and Young Adults Affairs department of one of the biggest churches in the world: Redeemed Christian Church of God. According to the church, the event is geared towards “engaging and releasing the innovative forces within the Technology sector with the intent to make a Christian impact on culture.”

It is scheduled to run from November 1-3 2018.

It is really refreshing because this is the first time a church, and in this case a very powerful church, will back a tech event such as a hackathon. The news will come both as a surprise and a welcome development to many.
